is it tough to get into iiser through IAT ,and is it worth it? what are the job opportunities after BS-MS dual degree in biological sciences
Hey,
IISERs consider KVPY and JEE score, but not NEET. IISER also gives admission to students on the basis of its own aptitude test for science stream students who pass class 12 with marks equal or above the cut off percentage. If your concepts are strong, then it will be easy for you to clear the IISER aptitude test.
You can also take admission in IISER through SCB Channel (Percentage in State and Central Boards). Students who are appearing or have passed (10+2) level with science stream with marks equal or above the cut off percentage in their respective boards are eligible to apply.
Students applying through SCB channel will have to appear in the IAT (IISER Aptitude Test) which will be conducted at various centres across the country.
If you are interested to do research in basic sciences, then obviously IISERs are the best option in India. IISERs were made for the purpose of doing research after all the IITs(except one or two) failed in doing good research in basic sciences. IISERS are doing a great jobs so far it's inception. If you see the latest Nature index ranking 2020, IISERs have done well than most of the IITs. IISER Kolkata, Pune, Bhopal all there in the top 10 institutions in India in Nature index ranking 2020, with IISER Kolkata leading them all at Number 5.
Academia (Research): After doing a PhD, post your BS-MS course, you can join any CSIR labs or University or research lab as a staff scientist or principal investigator. Academia (Teaching): The IISER graduates can take up a teaching job in any school/University after qualifying the requisite exams like UPSC.
I hope this helps
I am a grade 11 student and interested in pursuing pure sciences degree BS\BS+MS Integrated\ BSC in Biological sciences. I have chosen Physics, Chemistry & Biology as my core subjects in Grade 11 ( I have not taken Mathematics) . Which Universities\Colleges in India should i target ?
Nice to see that you are interested in Basic sciences. Now you should know in India there are four kind of Institutions:
- Research Institutes
- Central Government Institutes
- State government institutes
- Private institutes
Each of this institute courses in Biology but in each case there are some differences which you have to parametrize based on your targets.
At the top are the research institutes which are more interested in research and the best minds are there to guide you. In this institutes they make you more research oriented rather than just scoring marks. So if you are interested in research and want to pursue it in future then you should try for institutes like-
- IISC
- IISER
- NISER
Now you may think that if you can't be a part of this colleges then you won't do good research, this is a misconception. In fact if you see the most PhD scholars then they are doing great works and are not part of any one of them in there BSc courses. So don't think that. Here what I meant is that the exposure to research is given by this institutes during your bachelors which normally the central universities and state universities can't impart before PG course.
Now for Central Universities and State government universities both are the great to study your UG or PG at. Depending on your location you have to choose the best as per your aspirations.
Some of the most preferred colleges in India for BSc Biology are:
DU Delhi - University of Delhi
Aliah University, Kolkata
Loyola College, Chennai
Presidency College, Chennai
Government J Yaganandam Chhattisgarh College, Raipur

sir can i get admission in msc in biological sciences on the basis of gate score
hi,
till 2020 gate exam, candidates who are in final year of studies of b.tech or 4 years bachelors course, or already completed b.tech or relevant stream or final year of m.sc course are eligible to appear in gate exam. however on 2021 gate exam, eligibility criteria has changed and students of three years bachelors course are also eligible to appear in gate exam. so far admission to m.sc is done based on entrance exam by university or basis on score in qualifying exam. so this year till now it difficult to predict whether admission to m.sc would be done based on gate score or not. so I suggest you to check the official notifications carefully and apply as well.
gate score is valid for three years, so in case you want to go for phd course after completion of m.sc you will eligible to apply based on this score.
