Can anyone say complete details about company secretary course?? Job opportunity?
Hello Surya,
You are thinking for a wonderful career choice as Company Secretary is high in demand as a corporate professional. The need and the role of the company secretaries have been increased with the advent of the new Companies Act 2013. Company Secretary has been recognized as Key Managerial Personnel along with the Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director, whole-time director and Chief Financial Officer. The role itself has evolved from being more an inward-focused role, to becoming much more outward-looking. A Company Secretary renders Corporate Governance and Secretarial services, something pivotal in the corporate sector today, and thus many job opportunities are available for qualifiled Company Secretaries.
A Company Secretary acts as a compliance officer for a company to ensure that all applicable laws and regulations are followed. He is also responsible for conducting board and shareholders meetings and also draft agreements on behalf of the company. The subjects to be studied as a CS Student include company laws, business laws, commercial laws, industrial laws, taxation, company accounts etc. Following are the details to pursue this course in India.
Admission to the CS course is open throughout the year and examinations are held twice a year in June and December. It is a minimum 3 years course depending on how fast you clear your papers. The statutory professional body regulating this profession is the Institute of Companies Secretaries of India (ICSI).
If you want to join the course after 10+2 pass or equivalent you need to undergo THREE STAGES:
1. Foundation Programme
2. Executive Programme
3. Professional Programme
If you want to join the course after passing Graduation you need to undergo only TWO STAGES:
1. Executive Programme
2. Professional Programme
There are 4 papers in CS Foundation Programme, 8 papers divided into two modules(groups) in CS Executive Programme and 9 papers divided into three modules (groups) in CS Professional Programme. You need to clear all the papers of every stage to reach the next level.
In Foundation Programme you need to appear for all four papers at once. Whereas in Executive and Professional programme you can appear for examination either for all modules together or for a single module at one time. Admission fee is nominal and has to be paid once when enrolling for a particular programme but examination fee has to be paid everytime you appear/re-appear for your examination.
Qualifying Marks: A candidate is declared to have passed the Foundation/Executive/ Professional Programme, if he/she secures in one sitting atleast 40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate of all subjects.
After clearing the Professional Programme you have to go through 15 months management training in a Corporate or with a Practising Company Secretary Firm. Once you become a qualified Company Secretary, you can work with any Company or practise on your own.
As a professional student you need to put in a lot of hard work and dedication to complete this course. Keep immense patience and perseverance as it will motivate you to never give up.
Hope the above information will guide you enough to take a better decision for your career.
Good Luck!
