What is the scope for public health dentistry and job opportunities in india?
A public health dentist is a specefic type of dentist that works with specefic communities with appalling dental needs. As a public health dentist you are required to do things like removing decay from teeth and fix cavities, repair any damaged teeth and many more related to treatment of teeth. So if you are really passionate about prevention of dental related diseases and not merely treatment and if you could fend for yourself then this field is for you.
A public densit examines a disease not just at a patient level but at a population level. Thus it's scope is quite large and nearly unlimited in itself. You will have to work to mobilise resources to work for prevention of dental disease. As a community/public you will learn all the basics of dental trearment but you will be specialised in planning and implementation
India has a long way to go in order to broaden the scope of public dentistry the reason being lack of infrastructure due to which many dentists prefer working out of India. If government provides facilities and increase job opportunities then there is so much to explore in this field.
At present,a dentist can either set up his own clinics, teach as a professor or work in government hospitals with low salaries.
But if you genuinely want to work as a community dentist in India then you are most welcome for our nation really needs you.
Best of luck!
