SoPs are definitely necessary because most universities require that you submit them an SoP. A good strong SoP thta highlights all your research work and achievements in a good narrative style will definitely increase your chances at getting in a good BSchool. 

On the other hand, LOR aren't a requisite but, having one increases your chance because it gives you an edge over other students!

In case of MBA programmes generally students are asked to submit 2-3 recommendation letters . But this may depend on university to university.
