If you wish to do Bachelor's in Merchant Navy courses then following is the eligibility criteria
12 th science with Physics, Chemistry and Maths as compulsory subjects
Minimum passing at 60%
Minimum age required is 17 to 25 years of age
- For technical courses you have to entrance exams like IMU CET, JEE ADVANCED, TMI SAT, MERI ENTRANCE EXAM.
- You can also join from sponsorship through mari time institutes
- You can take admission through Lateral entry i.e after completion of first year engineering in mechanical or electrical with min 60% OR diploma in electrical, mechanical, marine or ship building engineering with min 60%
Medical fitness is also important criteria

Anyone can join merchant navy but make sure you know the requirements. The requirements that are to be fulfilled are mentioned below. Have a look at them:
1. You should have finished minimum qualification 10th (Any Stream) or 12th with Physics, Chemistry, and Maths for joining Merchant Navy. The admission in the Merchant Navy is done through Entrance exam which includes screening test and written test. 2.Age limit 17 ½ - 27 Years. 3.Minimum height requirement is 5 Feet. 4. Weight requirement as per WHO (World Health Organisation).5. People should have normal vision. But glasses up to or minus 2.5 do not allow people to join Merchant Navy.6.Fully medically fit, No Color Blindness, Eye Vision should be 6/6 no Glasses Allowed. Medical requirements shall be as per the existing standards of D.G Shipping INDIA.
Being an engineer the Engine Department would be the best. For joining this department of Navy, you can do G. P Rating, 4 Months Pre-Sea Training. After completion of training you have to complete 3 years Onboard Training/Sea Service as Engine Rating and apply for 3rd Mate Exam, after qualifying join as 3rd Engineer or 4th Engineer. You can also do marine engineering 4 years degree courses after this you can directly join 4th Engineer.
The ranking of this department is: Chief Engineer - Second Engineer - Third Engineer - Fourth Engineer – Engine Rating.

To pursue a career in merchant navy it is necessary to have a good vision. The careers are primarily distributed in two departments namely Deck and Engine departments. In deck department it is mandatory to have a 6/6 vision. Although in the Engine department you can have distance vision (unaided 0.5 (6/12) in each eye or 0.67 (6/9) in better eye and 0.33 (6/18) in other eye. You should not have any colour blindness. Laser operated eyes are also acceptable here. You can also get your operated during the course.
