as the entrance exam for M Phil at jawaharlal Nehru University is a Computer based exam so definitely it will be multiple choice question because it will be quite difficult to write answers on the computer system if it is subjective, so it is objective type of exam the total time allotted to you will be 3 hour.

Yes you can definitely pursue your M. Phil in statistics in government universities , just check for the age limits and then apply. If not you can do it through distance education from any university that offers M. Phil course of your choice.

According to your query, Master of philosophy in english literature or M. These days many universities even led their pupils to pursue PhD directly after Masters but securing an MPhil is still prestigious as it has many effects. MPhil finds a good base for PhD and it also boosts confidence of the student. Also an MPhil can become a lecturer with good salary. The degree is also helpful in career as Project Officer or Project Management Officer.

In recent days as far as I know, you donot need an M.phill degree to pursue your PhD.
So I would advise you to directly take up PhD after your Masters. But again an M.phill will definitely add value to your profile/resume.
