I have completed my 11th class i want to be an IAS officer so can u show me the pathway to reach my goal

pdwords Student Expert 23rd Aug, 2020
Hello,

You're still in your eleventh standard, so there is still a long way to go for you as far as UPSC is concerned, right now your priority should be to focus on your studies and do well in the upcoming years for 10+2 level exams, a when it comes to the eligibility criteria for UPSC ,you just need to pass graduation in any discipline from a recognized University, there are no barriers in terms of coming from a specific stream or aggregate for that matter, you can apply even in the final year and you need to attain 21 years.

After 12th there are two routes which you can follow, if you are humanities student and want to do graduation in the similar field such as choosing political science, geography, economics, public administration, history may help you as UPSC tends to be more humanities oriented, you should follow this only if you're wholly and solely focused on cracking UPSC.

Second thing is to have a back up plan, many engineering, medical or even CA candidates too apply for this exam and qualify, if you have some other plans in mind you can surely go ahead with that, it's in no way going to act as impediments, the reason I say these as people from different backgrounds as I mentioned above too have qualified these exams, many have had few years of experiences in their relative field as well, so if you're a bit unsure and want to have a back up plan follow this route.

Now, coming to your preparation part, you should start your preparation in gradual manner from 1st year of graduation itself and not before that(as you're still in school and your sole focus right now should be on academics), the first thing is to get acquainted with the syllabus, take a print out and go through it daily in order to grasp what to read and skip, also remember not to segregate preparation for Prelims and Mains as nowadays UPSC also frame Prelims question based on Mains Syllabus,
read The Hindu on a daily basis, and start with NCERTs books as this will build foundation strong, and then move onwards to other standard books, you will find many toppers answer sheet online, I'll recommend you to go through these as answer writing is vital process in Mains you'll be writing answers for total of 1750 marks, this process will give you a understanding of how to present your answer in an efficient manner and score well, you can watch YouTube channels as well regarding preparation of UPSC, there are many good channels which offer lot of insights by the faculty or the toppers. If you have any other query, you can write down in the comment box below.

hi sir i got 2822 all India ranking of ST category can i get seat in NIT surathkal

ARYAN SAGAR 2nd Oct, 2020
Dear student,

As you have secured 2822 rank from St category in JEE mains then it's not possible for you to get NIT Surathkal. But you have got a good st rank and you can get some other good or average NITs.
In NIT Surathkal the highest cutoff closing rank for other state male St category candidate was from mining Engineering and that was - 1646. And the second-highest closing ranks was for metallurgical and materials engineering - 1621.

So, as you can see there is no chance that you can get NIT Surathkal. It's better that you try for some other colleges.

My jee mains Sc category rank is 4757. Can i get Chemical engineering in NIT Surathkal? i have female quota too.

mjaisinghani62 28th Sep, 2020

Hello aspirant

You have not mentioned your state, where you belong. I think you are on border line.

chemical engineering, NIT cut off neet 2019 for SC category female was 4714 ( Home state) and 4951 ( other state)

Hence this year whether you be able to get a seat in NIT surathkal or not depends upon jee main cut off of the college 2020. Cut off depends upon various factors such as number of candidates appeared and qualified in exam, difficulty level of exam, previous year's cut off and availability of the seats etc.

For College prediction following links may help you.

Dear Aspirant,

For NIT Surathkal , the ST cutoff as per last year's data was 1711 category rank( for Mining) and for Home state quota it was 3308 category rank (for Metallurgy).Seeing the above trend if your category rank falls in the above range you should get a seat in NIT Surathkal. But according to me,you should also apply to go for a good stream in some good private institute which will definitely be a better option.Hope you take the right decision and Hope your query is resolved.Best of luck.

Sharon Rose Student Expert 25th Sep, 2020

Hello,

It is difficult to tell if 130 marks are enough to get seat in NIT, Surathkal because it depends on cut off and cut off changes every year depending on number of candidates appeared, difficulty of exam and number of seats available. Using JEE Main Rank Predictor tool your rank is expected to be in between 15934 - 18084. Considering 2019 round 7 cut off you have chances of getting seat in Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering and MME in NIT, Surathkal under open category as you have not mentioned your category we assumed it to be general category. So yes, you may have chances of getting seat in NIT, Surathkal with such marks but as said cut off changes every year, it may increase or decrease.

which is best?doing IT in nit surathkal or doing cs in BMS or PES or MS Ramaiah

Vipul Chaudhary 25th Sep, 2020

Hi there!

Information Technology is one of the youngest departments of NITK Surathkal. Having said that, it's doing a pretty good job in training its students. The strength of the IT Department is the course structure. The courses are well structured and me being one of the undergraduate student from the Department, I found it very relevant when I started off in the industry. There might be some of the courses in your program which might not be completely useful in the current industry expectations, but it does gives you a fair idea on how the things work really. Don't listen to people who say that - People who don't get CS, go to IT. There have been instances where IT has outnumbered the CS department in various aspects not limited to the highest job offers, research papers getting published etc.

The instructors are both good and bad at times. Most of the senior faculty teach well with the exception of one of two. Mostly, you will be expected to be a self taught student with not everything spoon-fed. But that really helps you a lot in finding out things when you go for a Master’s degree.

On a flip side, lately, the obsession is about producing more and more research papers with minimal or no value given to the content of the papers. Every team in group projects are PUSHed to publish a paper. That really shouldn't be the case. Emphasis should be on how much the student has learned by doing the project. I have also observed that most of the project evaluation happens based on the look and feel and not bother about the back end logic of the project. This really shouldn't be the case where a couple of fancy HTML pages would fetch you a top grade. Exam structure is very practical experience oriented. That's one of the good things about the Department. There are very few theoretical knowledge testing questions in the exams. So be ready for applying the concepts that you have learned in the classroom.

As for the location, it's located on the west side of the campus with classrooms that come with absolutely breathtaking views of the Arabian sea, making it one of very few classroom setup in the country with such a great sea-view. Since it's the youngest department, it has a very good infrastructure compared to other departments. It's very close to the main gate of NITK and has access to all amazing food joints that one can go to, after classes.

Dr. Ananthanarayana V.S was the previous head of the Department. A lot of good changes happened during his term being the HOD. He's a very simple, amazing person yet so knowledgeable and can be easily approached. He knows when to loose cool and when to stay calm. I and my other fellow students liked the way he administered. Other faculties like Dr. Sowmya Kamath, Dr. Geetha. V, Mr. Biju. R. Mohan and others are very knowledgeable in their field of interest. Taking up projects under them can be a great way to learn. A couple of them, like the well known Mr. Gaurav Prasad, did not quite do justice to their position and power.

All in all, the Department of Information Technology at NIT-K Surathkal is a great one when it comes to the course structure, associated labs and projects. What you make out of the opportunity really depends on you. The faculty members are really helpful and with the exception of one or two, they really want you to learn at the end of the day. Also, you need to know that for some illogical reasons, very few of the companies that come for the on-campus placements do not allow IT students or allow only the folks with a higher CGPA cut-off than that of CS folks. These are very few and there are also instances where certain big well known companies have hired only IT students and nobody else. It really depends on the circumstances on that particular placement year. To keep short, if you select the Information Technology department at NITK Surathkal, you wouldn't regret.

Thank You.

For general student, for computer branch closing rank was 2156 while for metallurgical and mining branch it was 27,212. If you have home state quota and general student, closing rank was 3561 for computer science and 38,716 for mining branch. Closing rank also depends on the branch as you can see.
