Optometrists are primary health care specialists trained to examine the eyes to detect defects in vision, signs of injury, ocular diseases or abnormality. The doctors of optometry are called optometrists.
The degree in optometry is of undergraduate level and 4 years duration with an internship to be done compulsorily. To get admission in this course the minimum eligibility criteria is that the candidate should have passed 10+2 examination with a recognised board with at least 50% and should have subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology.
Besides, the selection is based on entrance test conducted by Institution.

To become Optometrists , you have completed 4 year bachelor degree program, preferably in a relevant field such as biology, chemistry, or physiology. You will require a bachelor’s degree to apply for optometry programs. Optometry programs typically take an additional four years to complete. All optometrists have to pass rigorous nationally administered exams to earn their license to practice.
Optometrists can pursue M.S, M.Phil, Ph.D or OD (Doctor of Optometry) degree after completion of Bachelors in Optometry.
Master Degree Courses:
- Master of Optometry (M.Opto)
- Master of Science (M.sc )
- M.A/ M.Sc. (5-year Integrated) Courses
M.Opto & M.Sc are two years duration regular full-time course. For admission in these courses, students have to pass Bachelor degree in Optometry or equivalent course from any Indian University.

Students who have completed 2 years long Diploma in Optometry course may secure admission directly in 2nd year of B.Optom. program.
2. B.SC. IN OPTOMETRY
Its Same as that mentioned above
3. DIPLOMA IN OPTOMETRY
It is a 2 years (3 years long in case of some institutes) long Diploma certificate program. D Opt holders may make use of lateral entry and join 2nd year of B.Optom. or B.Sc. Optometry courses. Though D Opt course is job oriented, pursuing Bachelor’s Degree courses mentioned above will help one climb up the career ladder in a better way!
Eligibility criteria : Candidate should have passed 10+2 standard. Few institutes allow admission to 10th passed students too (3 years long course). Minimum aggregate marks required is 45% (may vary from one institute to another).
4. CERTIFICATE COURSES
Although these aren't very valuable but can be used to gain part time jobs as assistant in hospitals related to eye care
