I am trying to get into a PhD programme in English Literature in a reputable university. Are admissions for the universitites over for the year 2020-21 or do some universities still have their admissions for this year?
There are several universities in which admission is open for various programs.
For getting the accurate information keep visiting the college website for the same.
You can also visit college administration for getting face-to-face information.
Good Luck!
Through CUCET can I apply for PhD programme ?
Hello,
Yes, you can apply for Central Universities Common Entrance Examination (CUCET) to get admission to Research Porgrammes offered in the Participating University. The eligibility criteria is course specific so you need to check the eligibility criteria before applying for any course. The admission notification for CUCET 2021 is not yet released, the registration may start anytime soon. So keep an eye on updates. You can check the updates, important dates, participating colleges, courses offered and more using the link given below

hi,
Admission to phd course or integrated phd course in iits or iiser or iisc bangalore is based on gate score, applicants may also apply using ugc net/ inspire fellowship etc. however the cutoff score varies institute wise and subject wise. also candidates must have good academic records . for example the criteria off IIT delhi phd courses is as follows:
candidates with M.Sc./MBA/M.A./MBBS or equivalent degree must secure 60% marks or 6.75 CGPA on a 10-point scale with valid GATE score >= 300 or qualifying or equivalent score whichever is higher CSIR/UGC NET/ICAR/ICMR/DST INSPIRE fellowship. follow the article at below link to know in details:

what is my chance of getting into a direct PhD programme with 7.42 CGPA ?
As many IITs are calling for PhD after B.Tech and students who appeared for GATE and could not make it to M.Tech in IITs usually called for PhD exam and interview.
There is no such fixed CGPA . Students are shortlisted for PhD interview (For departments who do not take written tests for shortlisting) on the following basis:
Either GATE score or CGPA in M. Tech & B. Tech for candidates who have Masters degree and are applying for regular PhD. Though passing GATE is compulsory if candidate is shortlisted by CGPA (In this case GATE score needn't be current. GATE on which candidate has taken admission in MTech or any other GATE score is also valid)
Cureent GATE score for candidates applying for direct PhD. Generally those who have only BTech degree apply for direct PhD but candidates who also have Masters degree can apply.
Now coming to CGPA.
As I said earlier there is no fixed CGPA for a particular department and it varies each year depending on the following factors:
Number of PhD vacancies.
Number of candidates who have applied.
GATE score & CGPA of candidates who have applied.
Number of candidates department is planning to shortlist for interview. (Ratio will definitely be greater than 1:40)
It depends on the department also (You have not specified department). In few streams it is easier to score as compared to others.
For the branch like Mechanical minimum CGPA is around 8.75 (not exactly) and it is higher for CS, EC and civil.
