MMR stand for Maternal Mortality Rate. It denotes the number of maternal death per 1,00,000 birth per pregnancy. This does not depends on the duration or site of pregnancy. Reproductive Age Morality Studies are considered the best way to calculate MMR in India. MMR in India has been high over the years, but there has been a decrease in MMR during the past few years. The MMR is calculated at both global and regional levels every five years. Surveys and censuses are used to calculate Maternal Mortality rates. In India, Sample Registration Survey (SRS) is used for the estimation of the Maternal Mortality Rate.
There has been an 8.8 % of declination in the MMR rate.

Government implemented a few programs to reduce MMR which are described below:
Anaemia Mukt Bharat - It was launched in 2018 with the motive to reduce anaemia within women of reproductive age.
Surakshit matritva aashwasan (SUMAN)- It was launched in 2019 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under this, pregnant women, newborns, and mothers will be provided with proper healthcare.
