What is the full form of NAPCC?

The full form of NAPCC is the National Action Plan on Climate Change. It was launched in India in June 2008 by the prime minister council. When this was launched India was one of the top 10 countries in the world to have a combined policy for determining climate change. The Government wanted a policy on climate change before the G8 (Group of 8) meeting in Tokyo in 2008 and the conference of parties at Copenhagen in 2009. The G8 meeting consists of 8 different countries such as Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, US(United States), and UK(United Kingdom). This meeting is conducted between the leaders of these countries. The ministries took 6 more years after this to approve a mission on climate change.

This plan aims to fulfill India’s development by creating awareness among the people, government, and organizations about the threats caused by climate change. This mission mainly relies on support from developed countries and the main focus on keeping the carbon emission less than the developed economies at any point in time. The eight missions of NAPCC mainly focus on changing climatic conditions and steps to be taken for its prevention, conservation of natural resources, etc.

The ongoing initiatives of NAPCC are:

1) Power Generation: The government is responsible for the inefficient coal power plants and supports the research and development of IGCC(Integrated coal Gasification Combined Cycle) and supercritical technologies.

2) Renewable Energy: Under the Electricity act of 2003, and the National Tariff policy of 2006, the central and state governments must purchase certain grid-based power from renewable resources.

3) Energy Efficiency: Under the Energy Conservation Act of 2001, large energy-consuming industries are required to undertake energy audits and an energy labeling program for appliances has been introduced.

4) Proposals for the health sector: The proposed program consists of two main components as the provision of public health care services and the increased burden of diseases due to climate change.
