What is the full form of NH2?

It represents amines. When it is used as a functional group whose primary constituent atom is nitrogen, and it forms a total of three bonds, it is called an amino group.

The type of amine group determines the formula for this functional group. While some amine groups have nitrogen atoms that are only bonded to alkyl groups, others have nitrogen atoms that are bonded to one hydrogen and two alkyl groups. Structure of Amine Group

The amine group consists of three bonds, one bond with the carbon parent chain and the other two either with an alkyl group(R) or with a hydrogen atom.

One pair of lone electrons are present in the nitrogen atom that makes the central atom of an amine group. It has trigonal planar molecular geometry and is sp3 hybridised.

The four orbitals that make up sp3 hybridised molecules are split into three orbitals that form three sigma bonds (single covalent bonds) and one orbital that holds the unshared electron pair that nitrogen is carrying.

Types of Amines

Amines are classified into three types based on the number of the alkyl group present.

  • Primary amines are compounds in which the amino group with one nitrogen atom is bonded with two hydrogen atoms and one alkyl group. Its general formula is RNH2 .

  • Secondary amines are compounds in which the amine group with one nitrogen atom is bonded with two alkyl groups(that may or may not be the same) and one hydrogen atom. Its general formula is R2NH .

Tertiary amines are compounds in which the amine group with one nitrogen atom is bonded with three different alkyl groups(that may or may not be the same) and no hydrogen. Its general formula is NR3 .
