NIC stands for National Informatics Centre. It was formed under the supervision of the Ministry of Electronic and Information Technology, the technology partner of the Government of India. It was founded in 1976 with the goal of offering Central and State Government benefits significantly from the adoption and support of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and e-Government provided by NIC.
Its cutting-edge IT infrastructure includes National Knowledge Network, Multi-Gigabit PAN India Network NIC NET, National Data Centers, National Cloud, Video Conferencing, Email and Messaging Services, Command and Control Center, Multi-layered GIS based Platform, Domain Registration and Webcast.
NIC has also created a number of digital platforms for the nation's socioeconomic growth to empower individuals digitally. It connects individuals with the government through a holistic digital environment and assures tech-enabled services that reach the underserved, It does this with the use of advanced and resilient infrastructure, digital platforms, and on-ground services.
In the middle of the 1970s, sustainable change was noticed in administration in India and was even considered a turning point in history. In 1975, the Indian government made a forecast that the strategic use of information technology (IT) in governance would lead to more transparent and effective leadership, which would encourage overall growth.
In 1976, the government began planning the "National Informatics Centre (NIC)" as a long-term initiative as a result of this appreciation for the potential of information technology.
It has developed "Informatics-Led Development.", by implementing ICT applications in social and public administration.
It makes it easier for governments to supply services electronically to other governments, businesses, workers, people, etc.
Through its ICT network, it is connected to more than 700 district administrations in India as well as Ministries and Departments of the Central Government, State Governments, and Union Territories.
It provides a range of digital technologies to assist the government in implementing last-mile delivery of public services to the populace.
