History of NIIT

With one million rupees, IIT Delhi graduates Rajendra S. Pawar and Vijay K. Thadani founded NIIT in 1981. By opening nine facilities in 1987, NIIT created the first franchising concept for IT education.

When NIIT first entered the software industry in 1986, it distributed software products under the "Insoft" brand. The "Computer drome" was one of many marketing and promotional methods that NIIT created for the Indian market in 1988. The Bhavishya Jyoti Scholarships programme, which was started by NIIT in 1991 and targeted worthy and socially challenged students with the goal of enhancing their abilities and employability quotient, was another effort.

An industry-endorsed course with a 12-month Professional Practice for students seeking careers in the IT and non-IT sectors, GNIIT(Graduate from National Institute of Information Technology) was introduced by NIIT as its flagship curriculum in 1992. The NIIT stock started trading on Indian stock exchanges in 1993. NIIT established a learning facility in Hong Kong in 1996, marking the start of its international journey. The business also introduced "NetVarsity," a virtual university. NIIT joined a small group of other Indian tech firms in 1998 to penetrate the Chinese market.

In September 2001, the corporation was referred to as the "McDonald's of the software market" by the Far Eastern Economic Review. The same year, NIIT began an experiment that gained widespread media attention and the moniker "Hole-in-the-Wall." The project was built around NIIT R&D's "minimally invasive education" paradigm. It implied that children could learn to use computers on their own, without adult assistance, regardless of their social, ethnic, or educational identity. The MindChampions Academy (MCA) was established by NIIT in 2003 with Viswanathan Anand, a five-time former World Chess Champion and NIIT Brand Ambassador.

(Source: NASSCOM's 2013–14 Ranking of the Top 20 IT services businesses) In 2004, NIIT divided its software division into a separate company called NIIT Technologies Ltd. To increase the employment prospects for engineering graduates, NIIT introduced the "Edgeineers" programme in 2005. It expanded into a number of new training fields in 2006, including banking, finance, and insurance (via IFBI), executive management education (under the NIIT Imperia brand), professional life skills training, and business process management training (through Evolv and NIIT Uniqua).

Under clause 2(f) of the UGC Act, NIIT University (NU), a not-for-profit university, was formed in 2009 and announced by the Rajasthani government. As part of the pilot phase of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Skill India initiative and the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) in the North East, J&K, and Jharkhand, NIIT partnered with the National Skill Development Corporation to launch NIIT Yuva Jyoti facilities.

Baring Private Equity Asia purchased NIIT Ltd controlling ownership in NIIT Technologies Ltd in May 2019. NIIT Technologies Ltd. changed its name to Coforge Limite in August 2020 and started doing business as that entity.
