What is the full form of NNMB?

The Full form of NNMB is the National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau. The National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau was established by the Indian Council of Medical Research in 1972, with the Central Reference Laboratory that is established at the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad.
The National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB), since its inception in 1972, has been carrying out cut surveys in rural areas of the country. Between the years 1975 and 1980, each unit in addition covered a sample of 250 households in urban areas in one calendar year. In 1983, NNMB surveys were linked up with the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) which established that it was technically feasible to carry out a survey of food consumption and to use the sampling design of NSSO to find the nutritional status of rural communities. Based on this experience, in 1991, the Bureau adopted the sampling design of NSSO and covered 16 strata (districts) in each State. Thus, the earlier limitation in the spatial distribution of the sample in each State was also overcome.

Importance of NNMB

The NNMB will help monitor population nutrition status and assess the importance of nutrition intervention programs to assess mass inputs and determine pathways through which community nutrition is progressing in order to initiate appropriate corrective actions. The Indian Council of Medical Research established the National Nutrition Monitoring Board (NNMB) in 1972 and established the National Nutrition Laboratory (CRL) at the National Nutrition Laboratory in Hyderabad. In addition to coordinating the activities of government units, CRL also has duties. To sample, train, monitor and analyse data collected regularly. We have also strengthened our cooperation with the country's sample measurement organisation. Currently, there are 10 NNMB units in different states of India namely Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Orissa etc.

Nutrition Monitoring is important because it helps to-

  • Determine the type and the distribution of nutrition problems in the surrounding,

  • Generate policies and to implement programmes for the prevention and control of malnutrition and

  • To check the impact of on-going nutrition programmes and to initiate correct steps if they are needed.

Establishment of NNMB

NNMB has been established in the year 1972, in the various States of-

  • Andhra Pradesh

  • Kerala

  • Maharashtra

  • M.P.(Madhya Pradesh)

  • Karnataka

  • U.P.(Uttar Pradesh)

  • Gujarat(Rajasthan)

  • West Bengal

Objectives of NNMB

  • To collect information regularly and make representative segments of population in each of the States so that data can be collected on dietary pattern and nutritional status by adopting standardised techniques that are uniform too.

  • To check in intervals about the ongoing national nutrition programmes, to know about their strengths and weaknesses and hence, help them to take appropriate corrective measures.

Investigation And Sampling Design

INVESTIGATIONS

  • It includes Household demographic socio-economic particulars,

  • Intake of dietary in individuals,

  • Heights, weights and Skin Fold at Triceps,

  • For knowing the signs of nutritional deficiencies clinical examination is done.

  • Village-level survey information, including information on population, agricultural production, nutrition and other development programs.

SAMPLING DESIGN

VILLAGES

  • Samples are collected from the NSSO of Consumer Expenditure survey . It has been carried out once every five years to get better distribution.

HOUSEHOLDS SAMPLING

  • It includes Cluster method of sampling

INDIVIDUALS

  • It involves all individuals from the selected households.

  • Sub-sample are collected by systematic sampling procedure that takes place randomly

SAMPLE SIZE FOR INVESTIGATION

  • It is Computed to check the State level measures

Highlights of NNMB Surveys

  • It Covers the rural communities,

  • surveys are repeated that have taken place in rural communities in the year 1975-79, 88-90, and 96-97

  • It includes the study of the vulnerable groups It includes adolescent girls, elderly etc.,

  • Assessment of MNDs is done which include IDA, VAD IDD by taking adequate sample sizes to arrive at a decision, and

  • Evaluation of National nutrition programmes is needed

A survey which was carried out in the year 1988-90 in the same villages was surveyed again during the year 1975- 79 earlier in specific States. It was done to determine if there were changes or not. Changes were estimated in the diet and nutritional status of people living there. A survey was carried out in different cities of different income groups, during the year 1975-80.

It consisted of a sample which included 2 households of low-income group, middle income group, high income groups, labourers and slum dwellers. As no data has been collected by the urban segments of the population in the last 13 years, so a survey was done to obtain data on food consumption and nutritional status of urban people. And to find out the difference in comparison of the same sample and the data that was collected during 1975-80 was done. The groups wanted to be surveyed for many purposes. They were basically from the three different economic categories - the high, middle and low-income groups. In July 1993, the survey of urban slum dwellers was initiated.
