NSCN is an abbreviation form of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland. NSCN is a Naga Christian separatist paramilitary group that operates in the northeast region of India and has a trivial presence in Myanmar. This nationalist group’s objective is to establish a separate sovereign Naga state, “Nagalim”.
In this article, we will learn when NSCN was established, its factions, activities over the years, and the Indian Government’s response to the organization.
The National Socialist Council of Nagaland was constituted on January 31, 1980. After being dissatisfied with the Shillong accord, NNC leaders like Isak Chishi Swu, Thuingaleng Muivah, and S.S. Khaplang formed NSCN. This group became proactive in the northeast, and soon many people from Naga National Council (NNC) joined the insurgent group.
Important Note:- Shillong Accord was a peace treaty between the Indian Government and NNC in 1975.
NSCN was split into two factions, NSCN(K) AND NSCN(IM), on April 30, 1988. S.S. Khaplang leads the NSCN(K) faction, and Isak Chishi Swu and Thuingaleng Muivah lead NSCN(IM).
Y. Wangtin Konyak and P. Tikhak also formed a new faction of NSCN on April 6, 2015. This faction is known as the National Socialist Council of Nagaland(Reformation). NSCN(R) and NSCN(IM) follow a peaceful approach to achieve the objective, while NSCN(K) disapproves of a peaceful process and has revoked the ceasefire numerous times.
Since its establishment, the principal objective of NSCN has been to form a separate Government to create what they call a “Greater Nagaland”. The National Socialist Council of Nagaland aims to reunite all the Naga tribes and some areas of Myanmar under a proposed state called Nagalim. NSCN proclaims the new state will be based on socialism for economic development, and It’ll have a spiritual outlook as per their slogan “Nagaland for Christ”.
Here are some of NSCN’s goals:-
Forming a sovereign state called Nagalim
Bringing all the Naga tribes under that state
Socialist economic development
Promoting Nagaland for Christ ideology
NSCN has been active for more than four decades now. In these four decades, many times, the Indian Government has approached the separatist group with dialogue offers and peace talks. The Indian Government became successful in 1975 when they signed the Shillong Accord with NSCN’S predecessor NNC.
But the accord was dematerialized when some leaders split, and NSCN was founded to be more proactive in establishing a sovereign state. The NSCN(K) faction has troubled the Indian Government time-to-time. In 2015, right after the NSCN(IM) faction signed a framework agreement with the current Government, NSCN(K) joined hands with the United Liberation Front of Western South East Asia. This organization was held responsible for the infamous Manipur Ambush, where 18 Indian soldiers were martyred, and 15 were wounded.
After this incident, the Indian Government announced this organization as a terrorist group under the Unlawful Activities Act of 1967.
NSCN’s primary source of income is said to be illegal drug trafficking in Myanmar. Money laundering, funding from foreign criminal organizations, bank robberies, and extortion are other sources of income for Nscn and its factions.
NSCN has been accused of killing people for their benefit without remorse.
It is reported that NSCN collects income tax and house tax from people working for the Government up to 12%.
NSCN stands for National Socialist Council of Nagaland.
NSCN was founded in 1980 by the unsatisfied leaders of NNC.
NSCN(R) is the abbreviation for the National Socialist Council of Nagaland(Reformation)
