NSEP stands for National Standard Examination in Physics, a voluntary test administered by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). It was first conducted in 1987. It helps in the selection of candidates for the International Olympiad of Science. NSEP is conducted nationwide in India on a regional level. Students can take up the exam in English, Hindi and a few other Indian languages. The exam is usually conducted in the month of November and the results for the first stage are released in December or January. Qualified candidates can then attempt the second stage of the exam.
To be eligible to attempt the National Standard Examination in Physics, candidates must first fulfil the following eligibility criteria:
He/she must be a citizen of India.
He/she must be a student in grades 9-12 in the Indian school system. Students who have passed grade 12 are not allowed to enrol for NSEP.
The student must be between 15-20 years old.
The student must pay the registration fee of Rs 150.
The student must not have previously represented India in the Indian Physics Olympiad (IPhO) or the Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO).
The student can be disqualified at any stage if he/she is found to be ineligible for the exam in any way.

The NSEP question paper is divided into two sections in the first level:
Part A consists of 50 MCQs with a total of 180 marks. It is divided into A1 and A2- A1 has 40 MCQs while A2 has 10 questions with one or more right answers for each question.
Part B consists of 6 questions that are either short answer questions or problems. The total mark awarded in this section is 60 marks.
Registrations for NSEP are usually either conducted through registered schools or can also be done at designated examination centres. Interested students can also register online through the official IAPT website once registrations are opened. After filling out the registration form, students are required to pay the registration fee. The fee is a one-time payment, students who qualify for the second round are not charged again.
The results of the examination are declared online on the official website of IAPT. The list of qualified students is usually released on a pre-announced date in the month of December or January. The eligible students can then take up the second level of the exam.
There are multiple centres assigned for NSEP in more than 2000 cities across the country. Students are given the option to choose their desired exam centres while filling out the registration form.
NSEP has a high level of difficulty. It can be cleared by studying the NCERT syllabus.
Registered candidates can access their admit cards or hall tickets from the official IAPT website once they have been released. Students can simply log in to the website and click on the “NSEP Admit Card” link to get access and take a printout or screenshot of the page.
Students can prepare for NSEP by studying the prescribed syllabus per NCERT. They can also download sample papers, previous year question papers and mock tests from the AIPT website.
Yes, there are other exams like NSEP such as National Standard Examination in Biology (NSEB) and National Standard Examination in Chemistry (NSEC). There are also other examinations conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) like International Science Olympiad, International Mathematics Olympiad, International English Olympiad, and International Computer Olympiad, among others.
