A country is like a large machine with a lot of gears and other moving parts. All these moving parts have one goal and that is to make sure that the citizen of the nation all living harmonious life. Because if the citizens are doing well it directly affects the well-being of our country.
NSSO is an organisation which is responsible for conducting surveys on multiple fronts to collect important and useable data, Let us learn more about this organisation, its history and its responsibilities.
The full form of NSSO is National Sample Survey Office. It is the NSSO’s job to conduct surveys on demographic, socioeconomic, agricultural and industrial fields. They conduct these surveys in every household and business, regardless of which village, town or city they might be in. They are an important organisation who are responsible for collecting statistical data whose timely knowledge is critical for the development of our county.
NSSO is part of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The Ministry is divided into 2 wings, the Statistics wing and the Programme Implementation wing. The following are the parts of the MoSPI.

The National Sample Survey Office was established in the year 1950 as a part of the Ministry of Finance. Since its creation, the NSSO has found its home with a few divisions in the government, in 1957 it was transferred to the Cabinet Secretariat. In 1970, it was placed under the care of the Ministry of PLanning’s Department of Statistics. In 1999 it found permanent residence in the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
Following are some of the responsibilities of the NSSO.
Their primary responsibility is to conduct sample surveys on a large-scale. These surveys will touch on topics like household consumer spending, employment and unemployment, and health and medical services to name a few.
They determine the areas of import which need to cover during a survey cycle. These areas are selected based on their critical nature and the national importance of data.
On the agricultural front, the NSSO is responsible for conducting surveys which help in the timely determination of gross crop production estimates. They are also responsible for producing the annual report on their findings.
Following are the divisions within the NSSO. There are 4 in total.
Survey Design and Research Division (SDRD)
The headquarters of SDRD is based in Kolkatta. It is responsible for survey analysis and presentation, plan design, sample design, and development of ideas and definitions.
Field Operations Division (FOD)
The FOD has its headquarters in Delhi/Faridabad. They are the division responsible for doing the footwork required to collect all the data from every corner of this nation. They have 6 Zonal offices, 49 regional offices and 118 Sub-regional offices spread across the nation.
Data Processing Division (DPD)
DPD has its headquarters located in Kolkatta. They are responsible for developing and running the software which processes the data which is collected from sample surveys. It has 6 smaller Data Processing Centred across the nation.
Coordination and Publication Division (CPD)
The headquarters of CPD is based in New Delhi. It functions as a monitoring and coordinating entity between all the divisions of the NSSO. They are also responsible for publishing the bi-annual journal “Sarvekshana” and hosting National Seminars.
Until May 2019, the National Sample Survey Office was part of the Indian government's Ministry of Statistics. The Indian government issued an order on May 23, 2019, to merge the NSSO and the Central Statistics Office (CSO) to form the National Statistical Office. (NSO). According to the government, the NSO would be led by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation. (MOSPI).
CSO, formerly known as the Central Statistics Organisation of India, is in charge of coordinating statistical activities in India as well as developing and maintaining statistical standards.
The Director-General leads the CSO, which is supported by five other Director-Generals and four Deputy Director-Generals, six Joint Directors, seven special task officers, thirty deputy directors, 48 assistant directors, and various support employees.
It has a Graphical Unit that is well-equipped. The CSO is headquartered in Delhi.
