What is the full form of PCRA?

The full form of PCRA is Petroleum Conservation Research Association. PCRA is an organization which was established in India during 1978, by the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas of the Government of India promotes energy efficiency in various sectors of the economy. It also helps the government in proposing various policies and strategies which are aimed at reducing India's dependency on consumption of oil, so as to save money, to reduce the environmental impact of oil consumption and also to conserve fossil fuels.

The PCRA is mandated to promote the popular awareness of the importance of energy conservation. It suggested that various energy efficiency measures, like switching off car engines at traffic signals and driving at the speed of 45–50 km/h, could help most of the countries to reduce their use of petroleum products. It also promotes a mass media awareness campaign known as "Save Fuel Yaani Save Money", which is broadcasted on television, radio, and in newspapers.

Mission and vision of PCRA

PCRA is a national government agency which promotes energy efficiency in various sectors of economy. It also helps the government in proposing various policies and strategies for petroleum conservation, which aims at reducing the excessive dependence of the country on oil consumption. It has broadened its role in improving productivity in the use of various energy resources.

It has developed many education or awareness based films, TV spots and radio jingles in different languages for the promotion of oil conservation. PCRA also publishes journals and newsletters. Active Conservation Techniques is a journal containing articles on technology by various energy experts and it also brings out many successful case studies leading to the conservation of energy.

Vision: To become a center of excellence for the conservation of hydrocarbons and environment protection for the sustainable development of our inherent strength.

Mission: Efficient utilization of energy and environment protection leading to Improvement in the Quality of Life.

Objectives of PCRA

  • To formulate various strategies and promote measures for accelerating the conservation of petroleum products resulting in the environment protection, sustainable development, and energy conservation.

  • To create awareness among the people about the importance, benefits and ways of conserving petroleum products and a clean environment by enhancing information and awareness.

  • To promote R&D and deployment efforts which are aimed at petroleum conservation and environmental conservation and protection, support and enhanced efforts for adoption of fuel-efficient technologies and substituting the petroleum products with alternate fuels and renewable sources of energy.

  • To establish synergistic linkages at national and international levels aimed at petroleum conservation and environment protection.

  • To give training and technical advisory services, which are designed to achieve economy & efficiency in the use of petroleum products for a cleaner environment.

  • To function as a Think Tank for the Govt. of India for proposing policies and strategies on petroleum conservation and environment protection which are aimed at reducing excessive dependence on oil.

The awareness campaign launched by PCRA

‘Saksham’, is a type of an annual people-centric campaign of the Petroleum Conservation Research Association, by the aegis of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Saksham 2022 was launched by Sh. Pankaj Jain, Secretary, and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Chairman of PCRA. The campaign continued till 30th April 2022, and the title was “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav through Green & Clean Energy”. It is a flagship public awareness campaign which aims to spread the message of Fuel Conservation and Energy Efficiency and help in forming a cleaner and greener India and also reduce its dependence on crude oil imports.

The program was started with the conservation tips of the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Puri and the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Labour and Employment Shri Rameswar. Later, it was followed by the Administration of Oil & Gas Conservation Pledge.

Some achievements of PCRA

Youths and housewives are the major target audience in the sector. The inter-ministerial group has identified a saving potential of about 30% in this sector. PCRA’s spectrum of activities includes the education of housewives on good cooking habits, the usage of BIS-marked fuel-efficient stoves, educating the housewives and youth related to good driving habits and the Conservation of petroleum products. PCRA also encourages the use of alternate energy sources like bio-gas, solar energy, e-mobility etc.
