The full form of PWD is the Public Works Department. It is a department of the Indian government responsible for creating and maintaining public facilities including highways, government buildings, bridges, water systems, and more. The PWD is also in charge of setting up safe drinking water for the city and repairing broken water pipelines. Additionally, PWD is responsible for repairing any damage to government-owned facilities like schools, hospitals, or roadways.
In every Indian state, PWD is present. It is divided into sections, subsections, and divisions. It performs identical duties and tasks throughout all states, including designing and building all government-funded public projects, developing and building roads, ensuring their safety and providing facilities for them, maintaining and remodelling public buildings, etc. This task was traditionally done by the Indian military Board during early British Rule. A specific division of the Indian Civil Service was given control of public works later in the middle of the 19th century.
