Is it better to start preparing for gate from my 3rd semester as its core syllabus is from 2nd year and it has heavy competition

The best way to prepare for GATE examination would be to start shortly after the 2nd year as it contains syllabus from 2nd year. You shoul refer to recommended books for your preparation.

For sure, you should start preparing for it infct you should have started doing that from first year as it needs hardwork and time. But, you can also qualify GATE after startig it from third year but only if you have a nice confidence and a dedication to do hardwork.
