Hello Piyush,
Actually, you should have secure at least 75% marks in the 12th class board exam, or be in top 20 percentile in the 12th class exam conducted by the respective Boards. Then only you can eligible to get NIT colleges and to appear in the jee advanced exam.
Improvement for one or more subject – If the candidate appears for improvement in one or more (but not all) subjects then the 12 th percentile marks of their original passing year will be considered.
Improvement for all subjects – If the candidate appears for improvement in all subjects, the percentile marks of the present session will be taken into consideration.

You should be passed in every subject with good marks as jee eligibility says :
Candidates need to have secured a minimum 75% marks in class XII or equivalent exam or be in the top 20 percentile in their class XII exam conducted by the respective board.
For SC/ ST candidates, the eligibility criteria is to secure 65% marks in class XII or equivalent exam.

I hope this helps.
If you are unable to fill the JEE mains percentage eligibility criteria for the admission in IIT/NIT or any other governmental institutions then you may can give the improvement exam. Improvement exam is mainly given by the aspirant inorder to improve their class 12th percentage. It totally depends on them. Overall it's not at all compulsory.
All the best
