RAM stands for Random-Access Memory. RAM is a typical computer memory that stores data temporarily. It can be used to access as well as modify the data. It serves as the computer's main memory to find specific information fast. When a user gives a set of tasks, all those programs are stored in RAM for easy access and time-saving purposes. RAM is a volatile memory, which means that once the power is off, the contents of this memory are deleted. Therefore the computer needs another type of memory to store data permanently, which is known as ROM(Read-Only Memory). RAM can be thought of as a rough sheet of paper in which we can read and write numbers while solving a mathematical problem, which, once solved, we erase the rough work.
To complete a computer task, the CPU(Central processing unit) has to follow a set of instructions to complete the job. If a hard disk is used, which is a ROM, then the time and energy required will be huge! While RAM offers a solution to this problem. It can access any stored file quickly as well as write on it. Multitasking is possible in RAM only. A user can perform various tasks at the same time with the help of RAM. The intensity of multi-tasking depends on the capacity of RAM. Most commonly used RAMs are of capacity 8GB(gigabyte) and 16 GB. Although nowadays, you can use up to 128GB of RAM!
IBM (International Business Machines Corporation) tabulating machines from the mid-1930s used mechanical counters to store information. Then due to technology, it transformed into magnetic core memory. Then it was converted to MOSFET(metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor), which then further developed into static random access memory which further developed into dynamic RAM. Lastly, synchronous DRAM(Dynamic RAM) was developed by Samsung electronics as a 16 mbit (megabit) memory chip in 1998.
