Logical Sequence of words: In logical reasoning, in the topic, the logical sequence of the words a group of letters or words is given. The candidates have to arrange those words according to the requirement of the question and for letters, candidates need to construct new words using the given letters. These questions are asked in various competitive and college entrance exams such as SSC, Banking, RRB, CUET, BITSAT, Insurance etc to check the vocabulary of the candidate and general knowledge of the various terms used in daily routine.
In this article, we will cover the logical sequence of words reasoning questions, logical sequence of words examples, how to solve the logical sequence of words questions etc.

What is the Meaning of the Logical Sequence of Words?

The logical sequence of the words is defined as the arrangement of the words according to the required sequence such as the sequence of occurrence of events, the sequence of increasing or decreasing value, size, intensity etc. In the logical sequence of the words, four or five words are given. The candidate has to arrange those words in a meaningful sequence and then mark the correct sequence in the given options.

In the logical sequence of words, there is not a specific pattern to deal with the questions. Each question on this topic may follow a different type of pattern. There are various types of the logical sequence of the words which are defined below.

Types of the Logical Sequence of the Words

There are four types of the logical sequence of the words which are as follows:
1. Sequence of Occurrence of Events
2. Sequence of Objects in a Specific Class
3. Sequential Order of Words According to Dictionary
4. Sequence in Ascending or Descending Order

Let’s discuss each type in detail:

1. Sequence of Occurrence of Events

In this type of question, a set of given words in the question are those which are related to a particular event or present the various stages of a certain chained process from beginning to end like from birth to death. The candidates have to select that option from the given options, which represents the correct order of the process.

Example:
1) Directions: Select the correct option that indicates the arrangement of the following words in a logical and meaningful order.

1. Scrutiny

2. Applications

3. Interview

4. Job offer

5. Joining

1) 2, 4, 1, 5, 3

2) 2, 1, 3, 4, 5

3) 1, 3, 2, 4, 5

4) 3, 1, 5, 4, 2

Hint: Determine the meaning of given words and arrange them in a logical order.

Solution

The stages of the selection process of the job seeker are as follows –

Firstly, an organization receives applications from the candidates. Then the organization scrutinizes all those applications. The third step is an interview conducted by the organization; After that the selected candidate gets a job offer and finally, the candidate joins the organization.

Thus, the logical order is Applications→Scrutiny→Interview →Job offer→ Joining

So, the correct sequence is 2, 1, 3, 4, 5. Hence, the second option is correct.

2. Sequence of Objects in a Specific Class

In this type of question, a set of words are given which are related to a particular class or a group. The candidate is required to select that option from the given options which shows the correct logical order of the objects or terms in a particular class or group.

Example:
1) Directions: Select the correct option that indicates the arrangement of the following words in a logical and meaningful order.

1. Tissue

2. Cell

3. Organ

4. Human Body

5. Organ System

1) 2, 1, 3, 5, 4

2) 2, 1, 5, 4, 3

3) 2, 3, 1, 5, 4

4) 1, 2, 3, 5, 4

Hint: Determine the meaning of given words and arrange them accordingly.

Solution

1. Tissue; A tissue is a group of cells.

2. Cell; It is the smallest unit of life and the basic building block of the human body.

3. Organ; Organs are made of tissues.

4. Human Body: It is made up of organ systems.

5. Organ System: It is made up of organs.

So, the correct sequence is Cell→Tissue→Organ→Organ System→Human body; 2, 1, 3, 5, 4

Hence, the first option is correct.

3. Sequential Order of Words According to Dictionary

In this type of question, a set of words is given in the question and the candidates have to arrange those words according to the English dictionary.

Example
Directions: Select the option that represents the correct order of the given words as they would appear in an English dictionary.

1. Laudanum

2. Lattice

3. Laudation

4. Latterly

5. Laudable

1) 2, 4, 5, 3, 1

2) 2, 4, 1, 5, 3

3) 4, 2, 3, 1, 5

4) 4, 2, 5, 1, 3

Hint: Compare the words, letter by letter from left to right. If two letters are the same, move to the next letter and compare.

Solution

The first two letters are common in all the words, so we will start from the third letter of the given words.

Step 1: We can see that the third letters are u and t, and as t comes before u in the dictionary (Lattice, Latterly) will come before options (Laudanum, Laudation, Laudable).

Step 2: On comparing Lattice and Latterly, we can see Latt is common, and after that i and e are there, as e comes before i, so Latterly will come before Lattice.

Step 3: In Laudanum, Laudation, and Laudable, the first 5 letters are common, and after that n, t, and b are there, and in the dictionary b comes before n, and after that t comes.

Therefore, Laudable will be in third place, Laudanum in fourth place, and Laudation in fifth place.

So the sequence will be Latterly, Lattice, Laudable, Laudanum, Laudation, or 4, 2, 5, 1, 3. Hence, the fourth option is correct.

4. Sequence in Ascending or Descending Order

In this type of question, a set of words given in the question are related to each other in terms of their properties, size, colour, shape etc. The candidates have to arrange the given words based on increasing or decreasing order of their size, shape, colour, age, value and so on.

Example:
1) Directions: Select the correct option that indicates the arrangement of the following words in a logical and meaningful order.

1. Knee

2. Navel

3. Eyebrows

4. Waist

5. Chin

1) 1, 4, 2, 3, 5

2) 1, 4, 2, 5, 3

3) 2, 4, 1, 5, 3

4) 4, 1, 2, 5, 3

Solution

Arrange the given body parts as in the body from bottom to top –

1. Knee 4. Waist 2. Navel 5. Chin 3. Eyebrows

So, the correct logical order is 1, 4, 2, 5, 3. Hence, the second option is correct.

Top Tips to Solve the Logical Sequence of Words

Solution

The given words are related to the weight measurements, so we can arrange them in increasing or decreasing order of weights as –

Convert all values in grams –

1. Kilogram = 103

2. Gram = 100 grams

3. Quintal = 105 grams

4. Decigram = 10–1 grams

5. Milligram = 10–3 grams

Milligram→Decigram→Gram→Kilogram→Quintal

So, the correct sequence is 5, 4, 2, 1, 3. Hence, the third option is correct.
