UAS is the abbreviation term for Unmanned Aircraft Systems, also known as drones. This unmanned aircraft system has a remote-control system to regulate its movements and functions remotely. These aircraft systems are designed in a way that does not require a pilot on board to control their operations. It is also known as Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), and Remotely piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). These aircraft systems are designed in three sizes- Small/mini UAVs, Medium UAVs, and Large UAVs. An example of a UAV includes the DRDO Rustom.Components
UAS has three main features:
A remote-control system that is either autonomous or human operated.
An aircraft without a pilot on board.
A control and command communication system serves to link the first two components.
The batteries power rotors of the drones. The rotors help in the vertical motion of the UAVs. The propellor in the rotor which is also attached to a motor helps the drone escape from the gravitational pull occurring downwards. When the operator increases the speed, the force on rotors increases, by which gravity is broken. When this power produced by the rotors becomes greater than the gravity, the UAS moves forward.
Security surveillance mainly during conflict times
Cargo transportation
Detailed examination of structures, like railway tracks
Fertilizer application in agricultural fields
Climate research
The main three types of UAS include Fixed wing, Single rotor, and Multirotor UAS. All of these have unique characteristics.
Elbit Systems Hermes-450, MQ-9 Reaper, and DJI Phantom quadacopter are examples of UAVs.
The standard components of a UAS include propellers, a motor, speed and flight controller systems, a radio transmitter and receiver, and a battery.
The UAS systems use batteries that can last up to 30 minutes and be recharged further. In some instances, hydrogen fuels are also used, lasting longer, up to 8 hours.
A highly functional UAS/drone may fly up to 8 kilometres, whereas a toy drone may cross only short distances, approximately 100 yards.
