Course Overview

Design is an emerging discipline that has gained recognition in the last two decades. It is the study of the transformation of utilitarian products to fit the needs of a service or system. It bridges the gap between technology and the needs behind using said technology. Design Practice programme is an online postgraduate beginner course that will dive into the various concepts of product design. 

Design Practice certification is an industry-supported course that will be ideal for faculty and students studying mechanical engineering and product design. It is an elective course of eight weeks, where participants will be provided with assignments and video lectures to help them capture the maximum benefit this course has to offer. 

Design Practice course syllabus has been designed by IIT Kanpur in association with NPTEL. The course will be taught by Professor Shantanu Bhattacharya of IIT Kanpur. This is a free audit programme that offers certification to interested candidates who qualify for eligibility.

Eligibility Criteria

The Design Practice programme is open to all candidates. There are no criteria to join the course. Anyone who is interested in the course can apply for it.

Certification Qualifying Details

There are, however, criteria to become eligible for the certificate.  Candidates need to submit all the periodic assignments and obtain a minimum of 10/25. The assignment score will be calculated by taking the average of the best 6 out of 8 assignments. They need to appear for an examination and obtain at least 30/75. A final score will be calculated by adding the exam marks and the assignment marks. Participants who satisfy these criteria and get a minimum passing final score of 40/100 will be awarded the certificate.

  • To enrol into the Design Practice online course, visit the course webpage and click on ‘Sign-in/Register’.
  • Sign-up/Sign-in/Login with details.
  • Fill the online form to pay the exam fee is required.

Application Details

The Design Practice programme has a sign-up sheet and an online form. The online form can be filled after filling the sign-up form and registering on the Swayam website. To complete the sign-up form, individuals can either use their Microsoft, Facebook, or Google account or create a new account by entering a valid email ID and by the section of the username and password. If the account is already existing then one must log in with their login credentials in order to get access to the online application form.

Evaluation process

Candidates who join the Design Practice training can also obtain a certificate. For this, they need to pay an exam fee and appear for an offline proctored exam at a designated exam centre. The exam centre, date of the examination, and other related details will be given to the participants in advance.
