Course Overview

The Society and Media expert programme by Swayam will introduce you to the consequences of media on the societal structure. You will be able to identify the possibilities for developing the community through media, and the future challenges affecting it. Additionally, this course will help you understand the conflict arising between the dominant and alternative paradigms. 

The Society and Media certification course will foster an interdisciplinary understanding which will widen your perspective. Thus, you will develop an understanding of the contemporary trends emerging within the society and in the media. 

You will become a certified expert after you complete the Society and Media curriculum. The external and internal assessments will help make you certificate-worthy. Moreover, your training will be for 40 hours, spread over 15 weeks, so that you have enough time to grasp the concepts succinctly. 

The Society and Media certification course does not charge a registration fee, and any UG certificate holder can register. Candidates interested in social science research and social entrepreneurship can sign up for the course.

Eligibility Criteria

Education

Candidates must either be under-graduate degree holders from any UGC recognised institution or presently pursuing MA from any UGC recognized institution. There is no age bar.

Certificate Qualifying Details

Moreover, candidates will be assessed over two sets of examinations before they qualify for the Swayam Society and Media certificate.

Admission Details

Step 2. Click on the “Sign-in/Register” tab available on the landing page.

Step 3. Now, log onto SWAYAM using your Microsoft, Google, Facebook, or SWAYAM account.

Step 4. Begin your training after you enroll for this course.

The Syllabus

  • In the 1st week, the students will only be dealing with the basic terms and concepts related to society and media and evolution of media within the society

  • In the 2nd week, the students will only be dealing with the debates on f language and popular culture being framed within the society through media as well as diversity and marginalization.

  • In the 3rd week, the students will be engaging with contemporary media forms such as digital media and the nature of participation being shaped by it and lastly the nature of emerging challenges that exist between society and media’s interaction.

  • In the 4th week, the students will be dealing with debates which will be advance in comparison with the 1st unit. They will be engaged with the debates on the ideas of social change within the society and the role of media in the process. In addition to that, the students will also develop an understanding about the kind of stereotyping that is taking place within the society due to media and also the nature of convergence that is emerging.

  • In the 5th week, the students will be engaging with the debates on the dominant and the alternative paradigms of change and the role of media in the process. In addition to that, the students will also be dealing with the notions of literacy and its shaping by media as an institution and its impact on change.

  • In the 6th week, the students will be dealing with the impact of digital media and social transformation and the nature of intervention that exists or will emerge due to the process of change brought about within the society by media. 

  • In the 7th week, the students will be dealing with the notions of margins and marginality which has emerged due to the process of change and the issues and challenges of the margins. The students will also be understanding the debates on regional versus religion based marginality and different forms of marginalization that exist within the society and how the process of socialization is taking place.    

  • In the 8th week, the students will be dealing with the debates on the mainstream culture, role of media and the issues of marginality. In addition to that, the students will also be engaging with notions of caste, class and identity and its correlation with marginality. Most importantly, the students from this week’s unit will develop an understanding about the ideas of inclusion and exclusion that exist within the society and the challenges it is creating within the society.  

  • In the 9th week, the students will be dealing with debates on margins as the alternate voices and their issues in terms of their rights, the impact of media in highlighting their issues and the existing challenges within the society.  

  • In the 10th week, the students will be dealing with topic on gender and the changing notions of gender within the society and the role of media. The students will also be dealing with how gender has a pivotal role to play in the process of development and how media can be an important institution in pushing for modern forms of change within the society.  

  • In the 11th week, the students will be dealing with the debates on gender which are further complex in nature. The students will be exposed to the issues of gender and representation within the society and media. The students will also be dealing with the debates on gender and the contemporary issues and the placement of media in such social scenario.

  • In the 12th week, the students will be introduced to the topic on media and youth development where the students will understand the notions of youth and how it has transformed within the society. The students will also be exposed to the idea of youth as a concept within society and how they have been perceived in terms of societal development. The students will further understand how media mediates the cultural consumption of youth and how does it impact society and in what manner.  

  • In the 13th week, the students will be dealing with the notion of popular culture and its significance on youth. Further the students will be dealing with the role of cinema in shaping youth perception towards society and development and lastly the social and political challenges of youth in regard to participation.

  • In the 14th week, the students will be dealing with the changing forms of participation in relation with contemporary forms of media. The students will also be dealing with new media as alternative space for engagement for the youth and the nature of democratic challenges.

  • In the 15th week the students will be given additional practical assignments and tests for revision of the complete course before the commencement of their external exams.  

Evaluation process

After the completion of the Society and Media certification course, you will be subjected to two types of assessment—internal and external. The internal evaluation will be in the form of assignments and multiple-choice questions and will be worth 30 marks. A written examination/objective assessment test of 70 marks will comprise the external assessment.

Usmc dept of GGSIPU has good infrastructure, it has space for many activities and labs materials. Also The infrastructure has a unique architectural design making it look more beautiful and vibrant at all times.

Infrastructure of our was not very highly developed but was good enough. Wi-Fi, labs, library, hostel, canteen etc. Were available at our college campus. Hostel facilities were also good. Food at the hostel mess was made with proper hygiene and it was good to eat.
