This course is presented under NPTEL, which is funded by MoHRD, by IIT Kharagpur. It aims at teaching the basics of foundation engineering. The course consists of topics in civil engineering. This course will familiarize the candidates with a sound and solid foundation. They will be able to apply principles of pressure, arching, design if they wish to pursue Civil Engineering further. Students will also be taught to apply these concepts to different engineering problems.
It is an undergraduate core course, which focuses on the designing of axially loaded pile foundation and shallow foundation. The students will be taught the various soil testing methods, performed on the field or in a laboratory. It will also be discussed how to determine the soil required to fit the design parameters.
The characteristics of foundations for different soils will also be discussed. The course is appropriate for undergraduate students that are planning to appear for competitive examinations like IES, and GATE, and for college or university examinations. Certification Qualifying Details
After the completion of the Foundation Engineering course, being offered by Swayam, candidates may receive a completion certificate stating that they have completed this course in the online mode.
Taking the exam is compulsory for the certification. All the lessons are free, but to register for the examination there is a registration fee. Criteria for assessment is 25 percent assignments + 75 percent examination. There would be 12 assignments over the entire course. Best 8 out of 12 of these assignments will be considered for the 25 percent average that will be included in the final score. The exam will be of 100 marks, which will be scaled down to 75 percent in the final score.
