In this universe, we can observe matter in our everyday lives, existing in four states - the solid, liquid, gaseous, and plasma state. Other forms of matter exist as well, but only under specific and extreme conditions. Regardless of its existing structure, all matter is made up of atoms. The atomic arrangement, interatomic distances, and atomic ionization in matter determine its state.
In the solid-state, atoms arrange themselves in a particular structure, which further imparts materials different properties such as thermal, electrical, optical, magnetic, and dielectric properties, among others. In the Solid State Physics online programme, candidates will learn about the structure of solids, their physical properties, and the underlying Physics.
The Solid State Physics online course is a 12-week programme at the undergraduate level. It is intended for B.Sc. (Physics, Chemistry, and Electronics), B.E., and B.Tech. (Electronics, Metallurgy, Metallic Science, Cryogenics) students.

Proctored Certification Test (Optional) | Rs. 1,000 |
During the course, candidates will be given 12 assignments, and they will have to write a 100-mark proctored exam at the end. The certification criteria are as follows:-
Average assignment score = 25 percent of the average score obtained in the eight best assignments. Exam score = 75 percent of the marks obtained in the proctored exam (out of 100).
The average assignment score should be greater than or equal to 10/25, the exam score should be greater than or equal to 30/75, and the combined score should be greater than or equal to 40/100. If any one of these conditions is not satisfied, learners won’t receive the certificate.
After completing the Solid State Physics course, candidates will gain fluency in the following concepts: -
The Solid State Physics online course is ideal for:
Step 1: Click on https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/ You will be redirected to the ‘Solid State Physics’ programme page on the SWAYAM website.
Step 2: In the top-right corner, you will find the “Sign-In/Register” button; click on it.
Step 3: Log in to your Swayam account or create a new one. You can also log in via your Google, Facebook, or Microsoft account.
Step 4: Follow the on-screen instructions and fill in the requisite details to complete the application procedure.
You don’t have to complete an extensive form to join the Solid State Physics training programme. Instead, you can create a SWAYAM account via your email ID, or use your Google, Microsoft, or Facebook account to register and start learning.
Learners can take this course for free. However, they must register and undertake the proctored assessment to avail of the certificate. The test is optional, and they must fill out the online registration form as well as pay the exam fee to appear for it.
To receive the course certificate, candidates must complete 12 assignments during the entire duration. After these, they will have to appear for the proctored test at a designated test centre. The criteria to earn the certificate are as follows: -
Average assignment score - 25% of the average score a candidate obtains from their eight best assignments.
Examination score - 75% of the proctored exam’s score (out of 100)
Final score - Exam score + Average assignment score
Candidates must score 10/25 or more for the average assignment score, and 30/75 or more for the exam score. They must meet these two criteria to qualify for the certificate. If they don’t but still get a final score of 40/100 or more, they won’t receive the certificate.
You can complete the Solid State Physics course in three months or 12 weeks.
The Solid State Physics course is brought to you by SWAYAM, courtesy of NPTEL and IIT Kharagpur.
You can go to any of the designated exam centres and take the Solid State Physics certification exam.
