This course, which has been offered under NPTEL is funded by MoHRD, taught by IIT Madras. It focuses on the basics of fluid and particle mechanics. The course consists of topics in chemical engineering. This course will introduce the concepts of fluid and particle mechanics and also demonstrate their applications. Students will be taught to apply these concepts in various engineering problems.
This course is imparted by Prof. Basavaraju, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras, and Prof. Sumesh, Assistant Professor, IIT Madras. This course will teach you topics such as Navier Stokes equations, Poiseuille flow, viscosity, fluid statics, Bernoulli’s equation, cylindrical coordinate system, etc. You will also learn kinetic energy correction factor and momentum, pressure drop, boundary layer, scaling parameters, and non-dimensional analysis.
Concepts of fluid and particle mechanics are used in many places in industries as well as laboratories, etc. It is important for you to take the subject seriously if you want to pursue Chemical Engineering. This course gives you an introductory base to learning and being able to apply the principles required when solving engineering problems.

Certification Qualifying Details
After completing the Fluid and Particle Mechanics course by Swayam, candidates will be receiving a completion certificate for the Fluid and Particle Mechanics course
The exam is compulsory if you want the certification. A registration fee for appearing for the exams is applicable. Criteria for evaluation: 25 percent for 8 out of 12 assignments + 75 percent based on the examination.
There will be about 12 assignments throughout the course. Only the best 8 out of 12 are considered for the 25 percent average that will be included in the final score. The final exam is of 100 marks which would later be scaled down to 75 percent when added in the final score.

Step 2: You will find the SIGN-IN/REGISTER button towards the top right-hand corner of your screen. Click on it, to move forward.
Step 3: Use only your Gmail id to login.
Step 4: Choose Fluid and Particle Mechanics as your course of choice. The page that comes next will give you the details for this course.
Step 5: Go through the information, and then click on Next. Once, you have filled in the details, click on ‘Join’.

There will be 12 assignments in total, of which 8 will be considered for the certification, under the following criterion: 25 per cent assignments + 75 perc ent exam.
The course is planned for 12 weeks. It is a series of 64 lectures, in total, throughout the duration of the course. Every lecture will be under 60 minutes.
You will be given access to the video lectures, after enrolment, which you can watch and learn from any time. Assignments will be given regularly for continuous evaluation.
