Course Overview

This course, which has been offered under NPTEL is funded by MoHRD, taught by IIT Madras. It focuses on the basics of fluid and particle mechanics. The course consists of topics in chemical engineering. This course will introduce the concepts of fluid and particle mechanics and also demonstrate their applications. Students will be taught to apply these concepts in various engineering problems.

This course is imparted by Prof. Basavaraju, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras, and Prof. Sumesh, Assistant Professor, IIT Madras. This course will teach you topics such as Navier Stokes equations, Poiseuille flow, viscosity, fluid statics, Bernoulli’s equation, cylindrical coordinate system, etc. You will also learn kinetic energy correction factor and momentum, pressure drop, boundary layer, scaling parameters, and non-dimensional analysis.

Concepts of fluid and particle mechanics are used in many places in industries as well as laboratories, etc. It is important for you to take the subject seriously if you want to pursue Chemical Engineering. This course gives you an introductory base to learning and being able to apply the principles required when solving engineering problems.
