It is significant for any engineer or an aspiring engineer to have at least all the basic knowledge when it comes to the mechanics of bodies that are deformable. The knowledge of it is even tested by employers when looking for new candidates to hire but not all manage to pull through the exams.
This is where this course Mechanics of Materials comes in. The very first course that introduces the mechanics of deformable bodies deals with a handful of concepts like strain, force, displacement and stress which forms the basics of the subject and later connects to the more important calculations such as equilibrium equations, strain displacement relation and compatibility condition.
The course has been offered by one of the best institutions in India, IIT Madras and thus the quality of the course speaks for itself. It offers the most industry relevant skill sets consisting of clear understanding of all the important concepts like uniaxial stress, twisting, bending and inflation. Moreover, the possibility of a structural element failing is all taught in great detail.

Education
Candidates must have basic knowledge of engineering mechanics and know how to use basic calculus in order to be eligible for the course.
Certification Qualifying Details
Although the course is free, to earn the certificate candidates will have to register for the exam which will come at a small cost. However, to give the exam or not, is a candidate’s choice. The form for the exam will be filled online and for candidates to qualify for the certificate they must first complete both the criteria.
Firstly, the candidates will submit 12 assignments, the best 25% score of the best 8 of them should be at least 10/25 to qualify for the certificate.
75% of the marks obtained by the candidates at the proctored exam of 100 marks should be, at minimum, equivalent to 30/75. This is the second criteria for certification qualification.
When the candidates have finished the course and gained the certification, they will leave with great conceptual skills and a strong understanding of the industry.
Candidates will first register themselves on the website and then choose the course. If they wish to get a certificate in it, they will register for the exam afterwards.
Applicants who wish to be a part of the course are required to follow the below mentioned instructions:
Step 1: They need to go to the official website of the course. https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/
Step 2: Applicants will then need to register on the website. For this, they can use their Google, Microsoft and Facebook accounts or they can create a new account on SWAYAM platform itself.
Step 3: Applicants who have a pre-existing account on the website can use that for the purpose as well.
Step 4: After the registration process, the candidates will log in into the accounts and then go back to the course page.
Step 5: On the course page, the candidates can find the joining link through which they can access the application form. Please note, the joining link is not open yet.
Step 6: Upon filling the application form, the candidates will need to agree to the terms and conditions and submit the form.
The course has been designed as an undergraduate level of study.
Mechanics of materials by Gere and engineering mechanics of solids by Popov are some of the books referred to for course preparation.
The course has been designed with in depth study of industry relevant concepts that take 12 weeks for completion.
The course is being instructed by Saravanan U from IIT Madras. He is also the author of NPTEL web course about advanced solid mechanics.
The course requires the candidates to have knowledge of basic calculus as well as engineering mechanics to be eligible for the course.
The course has been offered by SWAYAM, a government initiative that makes education accessible to candidates for free.
However, the candidates will have to pay Rs. 1000 for the certification exam registration, which is optional.
The course, Mechanics of Materials, has been made and offered by the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology at Madras.
