Course Overview
The quality of steel plays an enormous role in imparting specific characteristics of a product. The absence of any defects and cleanliness are the two significant facets of steel quality. Therefore, the Steel Quality certification course is developed to help you understand the importance of casting processes in the cleanliness and surface quality of steel. You will realize this by using two techniques as examples – Secondary refining and continuous casting.
The Steel Quality program is provided by Swayam in collaboration with IIT Madras. This course, spanning over 12 weeks, tackles many topics pertaining to steel quality, quality issues, how to control quality issues, and steel manufacturing. AICTE has approved the course as an FDP (Faculty Development Program) course.
A digital certificate is also awarded if you manage to clear the exam and submit all the assignments satisfactorily. The Steel Quality training program does not stipulate any prior requirements.
Certificate Qualifying Details
The certification qualifying criteria stipulates that you must complete and submit all the weekly assignments and pass the final in-person proctored exam to qualify for the Swayam e-certificate. Moreover, you will only receive the certificate if you clear the assignments (Best of Eight) and the exam with 40% or above.

Admission Details
- The Steel Quality online program webpage can be accessed here: https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc22_mm12/preview
- After landing on the course webpage, log in to your Swayam account. If you don’t own Swayam credentials, register to create a new one. Your Google, Facebook, or Microsoft credentials are also valid.
- Once you have successfully signed in, click on the ‘Join Now’ option on the course page’s top-right.
- After clicking, you will be directly enrolled in the program.
Application Details
No offline application form needs to be filled or submitted to enroll in the Steel Quality online course. However, if you don’t have a Swayam account, you will have to submit an online application form during registration.
The application will require you to provide information such as email ID, name, occupational information, educational background, and password. You will also have to agree to Swayam’s terms and conditions.

You will need to appear for an in-person, proctored exam if you’re looking to earn the e-certificate. Exam registration will cost you Rs. 1,000. The Steel Quality training exam will be conducted in Swayam’s designated offline centers.
