Course Overview

The Rock Engineering online course by Swayam is an introductory curriculum, dealing with how rock masses and rocks behave. This 12-week elective programme familiarises candidates with the design and analysis fundamentals of rock foundations, slopes, caverns, and tunnels. Industries that actively operate in mining and hilly terrain’s infrastructure development recognise this course.

The Rock Engineering certification syllabus comprises critical topics like rock formations, rocks’ laboratory testing, strength criteria, analysing rock-slope stability, weak rocks’ foundation, geological data projects, tunnelling, etc. An AICTE-approved FDP course, this training is an IIT Roorkee offering, with Professor Priti Maheshwari as the instructor. The programme welcomes all learners currently pursuing their undergraduate degree, irrespective of which background they’re from.

What’s more, the Rock Engineering programme also features an NPTEL and IIT Roorkee certification, enabling candidates to display their verified knowledge in this domain. Learners can opt for this by paying a certain fee, sitting for Swayam’s proctored evaluation, and scoring adequately in their 12 assignments throughout the curriculum.

Eligibility Criteria

Students should first complete the ‘Soil Mechanics -1 and 2’ programs to gain admission into the Rock Engineering course.

Furthermore, Swayam will determine a candidate’s certification eligibility for the Rock Engineering program by evaluating their final score, which is the sum of his/her test marks and average assignment score. The former’s 75% weightage and the latter’s 25% weightage will be considered.

Students must secure at least 30/75 in Swayam’s proctored examination and 10/25 in the training assignments for gaining a certificate. Failing to do so, they won’t receive one even after maintaining 40/100 or higher as their final marking.

What you will learn

Civil Engineering skills

The online course in Rock Engineering by Swayam will enable candidates to display robust expertise in these concepts, once they complete the curriculum: -

  • What rock formations entail
  • Geological data and its stereographic projects
  • Rock masses, rocks, and their strength criteria
  • Rock masses, rocks, and their engineering classifications
  • How to analyze rock-slope stability
  • Tunneling
  • Weak rocks and their foundation
  • Testing rocks in laboratories

Who it is for
