Course Overview

Traditionally, randomized trials were used to determine whether a treatment, under ideal conditions, works for people afflicted with that particular disease (and no other diseases), if they are under the care of the best doctors, and adhere to the treatment as instructed. But most people have several underlying conditions, are treated by ordinary doctors under non-ideal conditions, and do follow the treatment as recommended.

And because of this mismatch, most trials overestimated the effectiveness of new interventions. The Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trials in Health Care programme studies this mismatch, and its consequences, in extensive detail. First, the course highlights the consequences that follow, if a trial is designed wrong (example: VIGOR Trial). You will then learn about the best practices for designing pragmatic randomized trials.

These practices should answer the questions that real patients and decision-makers might ask. You will also learn about the economics behind designing and conducting randomized controlled trials. The Karolinska Institutet in Sweden developed the four-week, intermediate-level Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trials in Health Care certification course.
