Course Overview

There is a broad range of plant tissues in nature like bamboo, palm, wood, etc. that have a cellular structure making them strong for their weight. If we look closely, there is a sophisticated architecture at play behind these solids. The Cellular Solids Part 1: Structures, Properties and Engineering Applications online course will help you study the mechanics and structure of various cellular materials.

With the learnings of the Cellular Solids Part 1 programme by edX, you will study the structure and processing of cellular solids as they are made from metals, glasses, polymers, composites, and ceramics. You will explore how we can design engineering materials inspired by the structural features present in nature. This is a nine weeks course.

You will generate models based on the mechanical properties of foams and honeycombs. The Cellular Solids Part 1 course will help you investigate how these cellular materials' special features can be used in practical solutions like thermal insulation, energy absorption, and lightweight structural panels. It is an offering of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
