It stands for United Progressive Alliance which is centre-left parties of India. It is the largest party in Indian National Congress (INC). It was formed in 2004 and predominantly left- leaning political parties in India. Sonia Gandhi was the chairperson of this party.
Several political parties worked under this UNI such as Samajwadi party, Bahujan Samajwadi party and left front party etc. All the policies and supervision was overlooked by the jyoti basu and Harkishan Singh Surjeet.

UPA was formed immediately by the majority of the votes in the 2004 general election.
Samajwadi party, Bahujan Samajwadi party, and Left front parties came forward to support UPA at a different phase of rule and various other political parties had given support to UPA formation.
After consultations with Jyoti Basu and Harikishan Singh Surjeet among the 59 members of the Left front, the alliance adopted a common minimum programme that initially oversaw the UPA government's policies.
However, the alliance later recognised the common minimum programme as supporting status, indicating the INC's centrist policy ( Indian National Congress).

United Progressive Alliance is referred to as UPA. It was established in 2004 and It is a collaboration of all left-leaning parties in India. Sonia Gandhi was its founder. During the 2004 general election, the Indian National Congress received backing from a number of political parties in India, including the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samajwadi Party, and Left Front.
This coalition was known as the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). Jyoti Basu and Harkishan Singh Surjeet were responsible for the early policies and oversight. However, the policies were acknowledged as having a supporting role for the Congress and the alliance's chairperson, Ms. Sonia Gandhi.
