Aravind Eye Hospitals and Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology in the city of Madurai was founded in 1977 and is the educational institution as well as eye care centre focused on ophthalmology. This affiliated college is situated at Anna Nagar, Madurai, Tamilnadu; however, it is officially recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The institute occupies the area of 3,160 sq.meters and has two postgraduate programmes in ophthalmology. The institute takes 52 students from all classes and has 28 faculty members that make it easier ass to maintain the student-faculty ratio. A modern Library acts as reference centre and smart class infrastructure, besides separate sophisticated practical lab facilities to meet all the requirement of ophthalmic practical learning. An IT infrastructure provides facilities for conventional learning, as well as embracing new techniques, an auditorium helps accommodate various functions and seminars. Additional facilities such as a cafeteria and guest rooms are incorporated in the general campus environment so that it becomes a complete educational complex.
Aravind Eye Hospitals and Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology provides two full time Post graduate courses in ophthalmology. The proposed MS Ophthalmology programme being a three-year course has accreditations for 20 intake seats and Diploma in Ophthalmology being a two-year course which has intakes for 8 seats. Both courses are aimed in training one in as many facets as possible of eye care and surgeries. In all the two programmes, just 28 students are taken indicating that the institute gives a lot of emphasis to quality through enrolment of many few students.

For the MS Ophthalmology programme, candidates are to sit and pass in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Post Graduate (NEET PG).
