Established in 1978, it is one of the premier institutions in Barpeta, Assam. The college is situated on a seven-acre campus that has established the front line of women's education for four decades. The college has a certificate from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), realising its potential endeavour toward quality education.  At present, the institute comprises 399 enrollees and 23 faculty members.

The college infrastructure offers a range of facilities to students for the best learning environment. It has more than 14,000 texts, references, books in special collections, and journals, and is to its credit, making it the intellectual heart of the campus. The library subscribes to several newspapers, journals, and magazines in English and vernacular languages in addition to the wide-ranging bibliographical library. This fulfils the demand for reading material needed by the students and the teaching staff. The college has also offered two modern hostel buildings with all facilities to outstation students.

Barpeta Girls College provides a huge variety of undergraduate courses. There are 12 courses, which come under both arts and commerce streams. This college conducts full-time as well as regular courses and thus caters to a vast portion of educational requirements. Among the arts major activities that occur in this college are anthropology, economics, English, Assamese, political science, education, and philosophy. The college offers the specialised B.Com. programmes in human resource management and cost accounting.

After the age of 17, one can enter open enrolment as well as merit-based admission procedures in order to get through in the Barpeta Girls College.
