One of the prime colleges located in Kolkata, West Bengal, Basanti Devi College was established in the year 1959. This women's college, under the University of Calcutta, has been assessed and accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. It sprawls over a small campus of 1 acres with varied undergraduate and graduate courses. Basanti Devi College has a very outstanding student-faculty ratio, with 1,518 students enroled against a faculty strength of 55. It offers 18 courses in 5 degrees with notations in the fields of arts and sciences—Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, and subjects under science disciplines.

Among the basic kernels of academic resources is its library with an impressive collection of 28,000 books consisting of textbooks and references. It also provides access to 25 peer-reviewed journals, day-to-day newspapers, and more than 100,000 e-books. Basanti Devi College is the first college in West Bengal to introduce INFLIBNET-NLIST connectivity to its electronic library and hence takes the lead in digital learning. Moving with the digital movement, the college has very good IT infrastructure with campus-wide Wi-Fi connectivity, making internet access problem-free for students and staff alike.

The institution offers 18 courses—16 undergraduate and 2 postgraduate. At the undergraduate level, courses offered include BA Hons in Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, Political Science, and Sociology; BSc Hons in Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics are also offered. The college has also provided general courses in BA and BSc for students seeking more general courses of study. At the postgraduate level, the courses include M.A. It offers courses in English and Political Science.
