The Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute, Berhampore is the premier institute for developments of sericulture in India. This 76-year-old institute is located at Berhampore, West Bengal and works under the Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Spread over 63 acres of campus, CSRTI-Berhampore stands tall like a beacon of excellence in sericultural education and research. The institute undertakes two specialized postgraduate diploma courses for 80 students in total, and two faculty members man the same. As CSRTI-Berhampore happens to be the epicenter for sericulture studies, it plays a very crucial role in policy making with regard to the future of India's silk industry.
CSRTI-Berhampore has all the infrastructural facilities concentrated for conducive learning and high-end research implementation. Library Equipped Library: Given that the research studies require access to a large number of sericultural literature and materials, access to an efficient library system is a must for support from the student's end. Advanced laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art modern instruments will facilitate hands-on learning and research in all aspects of sericulture. Excellent IT Infrastructure: All the premises of the campus are well-equipped with excellent IT infrastructure, making it possible for students to log online with digital resources. To provide all-around development, CSRTI-Berhampore has developed a range of sports facilities, a gymnasium and an auditorium for the organization of events and seminars. There is also a health center with basic first-aid facilities for taking care of the health and well-being of its community.
The academic teaching programmes in CSRTI-Berhampore basically consist of two full-time post-graduate diploma programmes: PGD in Mulberry and PGD in Vanya Silk. These one-year courses intend to specialize knowledge and skill in different areas of sericulture. The PGD programme in Mulberry has an intake capacity of 40 students, and the PGD programme in Vanya Silk has its admission capacity of 20 students. Both these programmes are constituted as an amalgamation of theoretical knowledge coupled with practical training on all these sericultural subjects.
