Madras Medical College, Chennai is one of the ten colleges under Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University ::: The College of Pharmacy is a prime institution which was inaugurated in 2008. This affiliated college situated at Chennai city of Tamil Nadu has earned its reputation in the pharmaceutical stream. It was ranked 78th position in NIRF 2024 ranking in Pharmacy stream which shows its concern in the academic excellence. The college is affiliated to PCI and AICTE for maintaining appropriate and recognised standards of education. Located on 35-acre land, total number of students in this college is 321 where 47% are Male and 53% are Female students. Nursing Institution has six courses that are taught at three degrees levels, and it focuses on different areas of pharmacy; the institution is staffed with 27 faculty members.
Currently the College of Pharmacy has modern amenities aimed at improving the learning environment for its student populace. There are functional laboratories on the campus to practice extraction, isolation, and identification of phytopharmaceuticals on the campus. The sports amenities are inclusive of a full-size synthetic cricket ground, the sport of volleyball and basketball court with provision for flood light facility, athletic tracks and field. The college library acts as an information centre where students can get different information related to their study. As for the, there is a large auditorium for doing extracurricular activities, parties etc. It also equally caters for the student’s health needs through a health center and also has first aid facilities, besides there is also a gym for those interested in body building. Computer networking enhances advanced teaching techniques, and a cafeteria is provided for the preparation of meals to the learners and faculties.
The college provides every programme that a Pharmacy student would need and has both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The B.Pharma programme serves as the base for the undergraduate level and the postgraduate encompasses specialised courses M.Pharma in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, and Pharmacology. In the college for students with an affinity towards research, a Ph.D. programme in Pharmaceutical Chemistry is also available. All courses are full time, apart from the Ph.D. course which is offered as a part time programme. The total student intake over all courses is 287 and the maximum number of intakes is offered in B.Pharma with 60 seats. The college enroled a total of 321 students in the academic year 2022 for different programs in the college.
College of Pharmacy the admission is done on merit basis and the counseling has to be done for all categories of seats. While choosing candidates for M.Pharm programmes, the academic board performs an operation based on the rule of reservation depending on candidate preferences and seat availability. The college also ensure that there is diversity on students from different region where 99% of the students are from within the state and 1% are from other state outside Tamil Nadu.
However, it is surprising that the college provides scholarships for students; 107 of 243 undergraduate students were reimbursed a scholarship while 12 out of 78 postgraduate students in the 2022 academic year. Although exact details of alumni are still inaccessible, the college has a long history of pharmacy education, and therefore there is a strong evidence of alumni in the pharmaceutical business.
