About College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Mizoram

The College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Mizoram, which was established in 1995, is a constituent college in Selesih, Aizawl. Situated in a campus size of 169 acres, this ‘first’ and ‘only’ specialised institute concerning veterinary education as well as animal husbandry thrives in the northeastern part of India. The college was found to provide 14 regular courses at three degree levels for a total headcount of 393 students. There are a total of 53 faculty members in this college and the college proudly follows a low student-teacher ratio that gives better opportunities to the students to get individual attention besides offering good quality education. The institution offers extensive courses in the fields of veterinary science education; some of the programs include B.V.Sc. and A.H. courses, M.V.Sc. specialisations, and PhDs.

Among the features, the college offers a list of facilities that are intended to enrich the learning process and to develop the practical experiences of learners. The facility also has well-equipped laboratories; there is a laboratory animal house to breed various important animals used in teaching and research. The college library is an information centre with over thirty-two thousand volumes of books, journals, and bulletins and subscriptions to 32 national and 14 international journals. It also has up-to-date facilities such as CD-ROM reference databases and reprographic facilities. The institution has invested on technology by putting up a computer laboratory that has 20 computers and power backed by a 10 KVA online UPS.

The College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry is providing a wide curriculum of courses at different levels of veterinary. At the undergraduate level, the college offers the B.V.Sc. and A.H. (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry) a full-time course of six years with an approved intake of seventy-seven students. Postgraduate programmes available are M.V.Sc. in Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, Livestock Production and Management, Animal Nutrition, Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Veterinary Biochemistry, and Animal Genetics and Breeding. For the higher research, the college also offers doctorate programmes in veterinary pharmacology and toxicology, animal nutrition, and veterinary microbiology. 

The admission criteria for the programme offered by the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry are strictly competitive. For the B.V.Sc. and A.H. programmes, the principal mode of admission is through competitive entrance exams conducted by the respective state departments.

The College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Mizoram, is a renowned institution with specialization in veterinary education and animal husbandry. The College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry follows a very competitive admission process that differs with respect to the program level. In undergraduate admissions, the college mostly takes into account performance in competitive entrance exams organized by respective state governments. 

The college also keeps 15% of the total seats reserved for candidates recommended by the Veterinary Council of India, New Delhi, through the All India Competitive Examination (A.I.C.E) for B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree program admission. Postgraduate admissions are on merit basis in qualifying examinations and are available on all-India basis. Preference is, however, given to North Eastern Hill region students. For 25% of the seats, nominations are made by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, on the basis of the All India JRF/PG entrance test.

Application Process

The application procedure for the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Mizoram, differs according to the course:

For B.V.Sc and A.H:

1. Meet the state-level competitive entry test or A.I.C.E held by the Veterinary Council of India.
2. Apply to the concerned state department or the Veterinary Council of India, as the case may be.
3. Provide all necessary documents such as academic credentials and entrance exam results.
4. Appear for counseling, if shortlisted, on the basis of entrance exam performance.

For M.V.Sc Programs

1. Qualify the All India JRF/PG entrance test held by ICAR (for 25% of seats) or satisfy the merit requirements on the basis of qualifying examinations.
2. Fill up the application form with all supporting documents, such as certificates of graduation and scores in the entrance exams (if required).
3. Report for the selection process, which can be document verification or interviews.

For Ph.D Programs:

1. Apply for the doctoral course in the concerned specialization.
2. Take the written entrance test organized by the college.
3. Appear for personal interview if shortlisted.
4. Provide all documents necessary, like postgraduate degree certificates and research proposals.

Degree wise Admission Process

B.V.Sc and A.H (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry):
This is a six-year full-time course with an approved intake of 67 students. Admission is on the basis of competitive entrance tests held by respective state departments. Fifteen percent of the total seats are reserved for candidates nominated by the Veterinary Council of India through the A.I.C.E.

M.V.Sc (Master of Veterinary Science):
The college provides M.V.Sc courses in diverse specializations such as Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, Livestock Production and Management, Animal Nutrition, Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Veterinary Biochemistry, and Animal Genetics and Breeding. Admission is determined on the merit of students in qualifying exams, and 25% of the seats are filled through ICAR nominations based on the All India JRF/PG entrance examination.

Ph.D Programs:
Doctoral courses are offered in Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Animal Nutrition, and Veterinary Microbiology. The admission process for Ph.D courses includes a written entrance test (60 marks), academic score evaluation (20 marks), and personal interview (20 marks).
