The Department of Optoelectronics is an academic wing at the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram which was started in 1995. This Department is based in the colourful city of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala and is focused of the promotion of optoelectronics and photonics. It is a constituent college of the University of Kerala and enjoys rich academic inheritance of the parent University. It is recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to maintain set standards of technical education in the country. It’s an impressive strength of four members for a department which offers a compact environment for students who wish to study further in this rapidly growing field.
The Department of Optoelectronics needed to organise a set of facilities for students to improve their learning process. In tune with this goal, the college provides a well furnished library where students will be able to gather a lot of relevant material in optoelectronics and related areas. There is an interest in physical activities provided that sporting amenities are provided for in order to balance the rigors of work. The department understand the need to be relevant with modern technological developments hence avail the best f IT support for research and learning. Practical needs of optoelectronics education are met by specialised labs, in which every student has an opportunity to work with modern equipment. Nevertheless, the university Campus has hostels for the male and female students and well equipped to provide compound with safe environment of study.
With regard to fields of study, the Department of Optoelectronics offers a narrow specialisation of three full-time Master’s and doctoral programmes. These include M.Tech in Optoelectronics and Communication, and Ph.D. Opto Electronics. While M.Tech programme takes two-years for completion, it has an approved capacity of 18 students, M.Phil programme also takes two years and has an approved student’s intake capacity of 7 students. The Ph.D. programme like most doctoral programmes takes a period of six years.
