The Cochin University of Science and Technology – CUSAT at Kochi, Kerala, has an academic facilitating unit called the Department of Physical Oceanography. These programmes are eagerly competitive and are only done after assessing the merits of each candidate. To join the M.Tech Ocean Technology programme, students have to register GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) scores.

M.Tech Ocean technology course has a duration of 2 years and has a total intake of 12 learners. Selection for admission to M.Tech Ocean Technology is based mainly on the GATE score. Candidates having valid GATE score cards are given first preference and do not have to appear for the Department Admission Test (DAT). Department of Physical Oceanography admission for candidates without a valid GATE score is through the DAT. The programme is aimed at providing the student with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in ocean technology.
M.Sc Oceanography is a two-year programme that is conducted full-time and has an annual intake of 15 students. Department of Physical Oceanography admission into this M.Sc Oceanography programme is through the Common Admission Test (CAT) administered by CUSAT.
