The post-graduate studies in oceanography and ocean technology are offered by the Department of Physical Oceanography and Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Kochi. This department continues to serve as the chief force in oceanographic education and research for over two decades. Admission is facilitated to select the most deserving candidates for its specialized programs.
The two main offerings of the department include the M.Tech program in Ocean Technology and the M.Sc in Oceanography. Admission to these programs is, however, very competitive and merit-based. For admission into the M.Tech Ocean Technology Program, candidates must possess a valid GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score, as admission preferences are first given to candidates with GATE scores.
The M.Sc in Oceanography is offered based on the results from the Common Admission Test (CAT) at CUSAT. This ensures candidates possess an adequate aptitude and foundation knowledge necessary for higher learning in oceanography.
Application Process
The application process involved for both M.Tech Ocean Technology and M.Sc Oceanography at the Department of Physical Oceanography, CUSAT follows these steps.

7. Submit the application form following all the stipulations of submission within due time.
8. Whether or not shortlisted for the M.Tech applicants without GATE scores, appear for the DAT.
9. For M.Sc applicants appear for the CAT as per the schedule released by CUSAT.
10. Wait for the result of the selection process.
11. If selected, the selected candidates will then undergo the admission process, which includes document verification and payment of fee, as per guidelines of the institute.
Degree-wise Admission Process
M.Tech Ocean technology: This course has a duration of 2 years and has a total intake of 12 learners. Selection for admission to M.Tech Ocean Technology is based mainly on the GATE score. Candidates having valid GATE score cards are given first preference and do not have to appear for Department Admission Test (DAT). Admission for candidates without a valid GATE score is through the DAT. The program is aimed at providing the student with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in ocean technology.
M.Sc Oceanography: This is a two-year program that is conducted full-time and has an annual intake of 15 students. Admission into this M.Sc Oceanography program is through the Common Admission Test (CAT) administered by CUSAT.
