The Directorate of Distance Education, SRM Institute of Science and Technology formerly known as.RecyclerView: Sir, commonly abbreviated as SRMIST, Chennai was established in 1985. This Special institute in Kattankulathur,Tamil Nadu is concerned with the delivery of sound distance learning to students following a given discipline. SRMIST currently has a combination of 13 courses in 8 degree programs at both under- graduate and post- graduate levels. The institute has a sixteen-membersed faculty, and it provides intimate character and professional mentoring to the students. The Directorate of Distance Education functions under the SRM Institute of Science and Technology which is recognized for higher learning and Research.

The following lists some of the real or would be facilities that an institute can provide to its students of a higher learning institution. These are complemented by a large modern library set in the main campus of SRMIST at Kattankulathur. This particular library has a rich collection of books available on different focus area of Engineering and Technology, Medical and Health Sciences, Science and Humanities etc. The library, which started its service to the academic community more than two decades ago, is fully air conditioned and uses the state of the art RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Systems. Having in mind the necessity to offer the users a safe environment in which they can study, the library is equipped with fire alarms, as well as CCTV systems.

The Directorate of Distance Education of SRMIST maintains a wide range of courses to tailor the needs of students for non-conventional forms of learning. The institute offers 13 courses in sciences and humanities at both under graduate and post graduate level. These courses are offered with flexibility with an intention of catering for working g professiona and students who wish to take online courses. Full time distance education programs are provided in the institute so that the students can simultaneously pursue other activities.
