The Directorate of Distance Education, Tamil University, Thanjavur was set up in the year 2005 is one of the leading provider of Distance Education Programmes. This institute is situated in the culturally privileged town of Thanjavur in the southern state of Tamil Nadu and it is constituent to Tamil University; the primary mission of which is the encouragement of the study of Tamil language, literature and culture. The Directorate has earned accreditation from the University Grants Commission (UGC) so as to deliver quality education to its students. The institute offers a wide range of programs with 16 courses in 7 degree programs so it is able to serve a wide range of student learners across the college and make education accessible to them.

Through the Directorate of Distance Education it ensures that the facility favors students ability and desire to learn. This institute has well stocked library which can be utilized by distance learners in course of their studies and a source of books for reference. They consist of common master’s degree programs and postgraduate courses like MBA and M.Lib.I.Sc, MSW, and several MA programs in dance, Tamil, English, History, Psychology and Yoga. The institute also runs M.Sc programs in Botany, Environmental Science, Geography, and Mathematics which will meet student who are inclined towards the sciences. In particular, the Directorate offers a B.Ed program, which gives opportunities to budding teachers.
