Government Arts College, Melur started in the year 1969 is one of the largest colleges situated in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. This affiliated college with sixty acres of campus area has been educating society for more than fifty years. The college is NAAC accredited and offers 24 courses in 7 degree courses for a total student enrolment of 2649. The institution has fairness in the gender distribution of student enrolment; 1,604 female and 1,290 males respectively. The college’s academic staff consists of 73 true professionals who provide quality education in arts, sciences, and commerce streams.
To facilitate the student learning process, the Government Arts College boasts of adequate learning facilities that are tilted towards the modern trends. It has provided hostels for the boys and girls separately for those students who come from distant places and need comfortable accommodation. The central digital library, built in a new building is a knowledge resource center comprising of approximately 40000 books, newspapers, magazines and journals.
