The Government College of Education situated at Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir is one of the oldest colleges that was set up in the year 1954. This mixed college situated at a total of 3.74 acres of land is an affiliated college that has been accorded accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The college has 459 students in total and 22 faculty members It teaches 3 degrees in education. The institute accredits itself with providing quality education in the following courses such as B.Ed, M.Ed and integrated B.Ed-M.Ed programme. The college currently boasts of extensive education courses whose delivery focuses on both academic achievements and personal growth among students aspiring to teach in the region.
The Government College of Education Jammu has many facilities that are put into use for improving the learning process of the students. Essentially the college library is a wealth of knowledge that will provide the needed books, journals and other materials of different fields. It also has a Career Corner with materials of competitive examinations. Some of the facilities developed in the IT section of the college are more than twenty seats of the network computerised laboratory, Broad Band Internet connection and other modern teaching aids. The college has playing fields for volleyball, kabaddi, kho-kho, cricket and also has facilities for table tennis for the sports lovers. Accommodation facilities have also been provided in the boys and girls apart from hostels and thus can house out station students in a comfortable manner. A canteen, medical facility, and gymnasium add up to the needs of the students to have a healthy state physically as well as the sickness of the students is also attended by a medical facility.
The institute has three full time courses in education at the undergraduate as well as at the post graduate level. these include 200 seats for the two years programme in B.Ed, 29 seats in M. Ed for another two years programme and One Hundred and Twenty Five for the integrated B. Ed-M. Ed programme that is offered over a three year’s period. The combined Conventional Intake for all programmes is 459, this is due to the fact that the college strives to achieve the best proportion of students and teachers in order to enhance learning. As much as graduation information of the current year may be deemed insufficient, Hardin-Bould’s College of Education commitment to quality produces competent graduates to meet their future responsibilities in the education field.
It is so because the admission of students at the Government College of Education, Jammu is Auswahlmassig or selective in nature. For B.Ed programme it’s through the entrance test conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (JKBOPEE). The M.Ed programme then gives merit to the candidate based on the marks scored in the qualifying examination, entrance examination or any other selection criteria as decided by the state government or the university to which the applying candidates belong. Similarly, the merit based admission is offered in the integrated B.Ed-M.Ed programme for marks scored by the candidates in the qualifying examination and/or the entrance test.
