The Government College of Teacher Education, Mangaluru was started in the year 1956 and it is one of the leading teacher education college in the state of Karnataka. This affiliated college recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), is committed to building the educators of tomorrow. Located right in the middle of Mangalor, the institution occupies a small, but functional territory of 1.14 acres. Currently, the total students enrolment in the college is 174 and total number of faculties is 11 making the learning environment of college small enough to establish personal touch. The institution provides only one programme of study, the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) to operationalise the institution’s mandate of producing trained teachers.
Facilities available to the students at the Government College of Teacher Education include amongst others modern facilities meant to facilitate their learning. The college has a well organised library that contains reference books in the field on teacher education and other related areas to aid facilitation of the learners. In an attempt to cope with the advancing technology the campus houses an up-to-date computer laboratory with internet connection for data usage for computer assisted / computer based learning. The use of technology is further enhanced by availability of laptops, LCD projector’s, StarBoards and interactive boards. Practical activities involve notable laboratories prevalent in the college such as the psychology lab and the science lab with right tools and apparatus. The institution also has an auditorium for occasions and seminars to enhance progressive academic environment.
As for the academic programmes, the Government College of Teacher Education has its main programme: B.Ed. This course is two years and full-time for the student, and it has an approved capacity of 100 students as a sign of the institution’s policy in providing high quality education to accommodate as many students who intend to become teachers in the future.
